Julie Bowen Recalls How She Landed Her Happy Gilmore Role Over ‘Super Sexy Girls’
Before becoming widely recognized as a member of the star-studded cast of Modern Family, Julie Bowen initially gained prominence by portraying Virginia, a character, in Adam Sandler’s iconic film Happy Gilmore. For those requiring a reminder, this role was that of the public relations director who eventually became the lead love interest. As Bowen collaborates with Sandler once more on the sequel to the sequel of the cherished sports comedy, she is discussing her experience securing the original part and what made her stand out among the other attractive actresses who auditioned.
In a recent conversation on the “Inside of You” podcast, Bowen looked back on her career’s early stages and discussed how co-starring with Sandler in “Happy Gilmore” significantly boosted her career. When questioned about the auditioning phase, she disclosed that she ran into some acquaintances who had previously been rivals, which made her self-conscious about her appearance as she started comparing herself to her peers. Regarding the “attractive women” she met, Bowen commented:
During the audition, I found myself surrounded by numerous women who exuded an aura of sophistication and style. It seemed as though I frequently encountered familiar faces, with a sense of deja vu, saying to myself, “Ah, there she is.” The women present were impeccably dressed, their hair and makeup flawlessly done, often in stylish miniskirts. They carried themselves with an air of confidence and poise, while I was casually dressed in jeans and a more ordinary outfit.
Julie Bowen, being exceptionally beautiful herself, appeared to undervalue her worth when comparing herself to other young actresses during the auditions. It seemed she thought the casting directors were looking for a glamorous bombshell to play Virginia. However, as it turned out from her audition, they desired something completely different from what Julie assumed. She later stated:
I found the young woman who entered prior to me incredibly captivating, exuding an undeniable charm. Entering the room after her left me quite apprehensive, as I couldn’t help but think they were looking for someone striking and attractive. Fortunately, our conversation with the casting director turned out to be casual and comfortable, allowing me to read my lines. They seemed visibly relieved, which led me to ask about their reaction. They confided that some of the applicants were overly aggressive in their sexuality. I was taken aback, as I assumed such qualities would be appealing to them.
In the world of Hollywood, sex appeal often takes center stage, but it’s not solely defining. On that particular day, what the casting directors observed in Julie Bowen might be similar to what viewers have come to appreciate as her career flourished. She’s not just a pretty face; she’s humorous, intelligent, and boasts exceptional comedic timing. Moreover, she displayed an outstanding chemistry with Adam Sandler, which is no easy feat given the over-the-top nature of his character. The casting directors were wise to see her potential as a star, and they capitalized on it.
It was Julie Bowen’s exceptional performance in Happy Gilmore that led to her being invited back for the sequel (even though she wasn’t sure she would reprise the role). The 2025 film, titled Happy Gilmore 2, sees Adam Sandler’s character returning to golf after retiring to finance his daughter’s ballet school. From the trailers for the sequel, it appears that Bowen is as captivating and funny as ever, and I’m eagerly anticipating her reprisal of the role. I can’t wait to see Bowen and Sandler sharing the screen again, and I must commend the producers for recognizing her talent so long ago.
Catch Julie Bowen in “Happy Gilmore 2” once it starts streaming with a Netflix subscription on July 25th. Until then, enthusiasts can rewatch the cherished original “Happy Gilmore” movie on the platform, building excitement for the eagerly anticipated sequel.
