Julia Garner’s horror reboot lands strong first reactions

The remake of “The Wolf Man,” directed by Leigh Whannell, is generating positive early responses before its theater debut.

Featuring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner, this horror movie is a modern adaptation of the 1941 film with the same title, marking Mick Garris’s second venture into Universal Monsters following his impressive “The Invisible Man” from 2020.

Written collaboratively by Whannell and Corbett Tuck, the movie titled “Wolf Man” has garnered praise on social media from critics for being both genuinely terrifying and intimately portraying themes of grief and familial distress.

In a tweet, the Digital Spy movies editor, Ian Sandwell, expressed that “Wolf Man” is another creative and trendy adaptation of a timeless classic by Leigh Whannell. He appreciated its top-notch sound design and visual storytelling, with Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner continuing to deliver strong performances.

As a gaming enthusiast, I embark on the captivating journey of “Wolf Man”, where I take on the role of Blake. Leaving bustling San Francisco behind, my family – wife Charlotte and our little girl Ginger – and I set off for the lush landscapes of Oregon. Matilda Firth brings Ginger to life in this adventure.

In the midst of settling into my late father’s boyhood abode, recently bequeathed to me under mysterious circumstances, our family has found ourselves under the unwelcome gaze of a hidden creature.

Hunkered down indoors for the evening, the three of them face the wild repercussions of the assault that could potentially drive them apart.

2010 wasn’t the first reimagining of the 1940s original, as Whannell’s film also serves as a follow-up; it features Benicio del Toro and Emily Blunt, like the 2010 version titled The Wolfman.

Initially, Ryan Gosling had been chosen for the main role, but he left the project in December 2023, continuing his involvement as an executive producer. The director, Derek Cianfrance, who previously collaborated with Gosling on both “The Place Beyond the Pines” and “Blue Valentine”, was initially slated to direct, but eventually stepped down from that position.

Abbott then replaced Gosling, with Whannell joining in to direct.

The cast of “Wolf Man” also includes Sam Jaeger, Ben Prendergast, and Benedict Hardie. This film is jointly produced by Jason Blum, under his production company Blumhouse.

Wolf Man is released in cinemas on January 17.
