Julia Bradbury reveals heartbreaking response from her children when she shared her breast cancer diagnosis as she admits she ‘didn’t want to look at her scars’ following surgery
Julia Bradbury shared a poignant reaction from her kids following her cancer diagnosis. When she broke the news, her daughter inquired, “Will you be okay?” or alternatively, “Are things going to be all right with you?
In September 2021, the presenter of Countryfile, who is 53 years old, received a diagnosis of breast cancer. Subsequently, she had a mastectomy to surgically remove a tumor measuring approximately 6 centimeters from her body.
Julia has a 13-year-old son named Zephyr, along with identical twins Xanthe and Zena who are eight years old. She is married to Gerard Cunningham, who works in real estate development.
During a conversation on Dr Oscar Duke’s latest health podcast, Bedside Manners, she shared that her kids inquired whether she might lose her hair or even pass away.
She shared with the healthcare expert: “We walked them into the garden, Jerry and I. We then informed them and said, unfortunately, we have some unfortunate news.
Your mom isn’t feeling too good, and she was diagnosed with something called cancer. When you heard that, did you wonder if her hair would start falling out? That’s usually one of the first things children think about when they hear about chemotherapy.

Certainly!
“Indeed, since they have been exposed to those visuals, it naturally led them to wonder if my fate would be one of passing.
‘I strongly believe I won’t perish; instead, I’ll undergo this treatment. My health might not be top-notch, and I could feel quite delicate and unwell.’
Later, one of my daughters, whom I often mention and brings tears to my eyes, asked, ‘May I still give you a hug?’ To which I replied, ‘Absolutely, you may.’
She also discussed how she felt about her body after her mastectomy surgery.
Julia expressed that she avoided looking at her scars, specifically her newly reconstructed breast. She was eager to move past the stage of taking painkillers and finishing her course of antibiotics. Her desire was to get back on her feet and resume walking, and ultimately, she longed to return to nature.
I aimed to embrace my true self more fully, so that I could confidently look at myself in the mirror and say, “This is my new persona, and from hereon out, this is who I am. This is our destination. This is our identity, and let’s advance from this juncture.
My mom, sweetly and affectionately known as Chrissy, eagerly wished to view it immediately, so I granted her access, and she simply murmured near me and expressed, “It’s stunning, Jules. You can tell it’s going to be wonderful.” (You know you’re going to create something beautiful.)

Julia has also shared before about the time when she informed her spouse, Gerard Cunningham, approximately four years back, of her cancer diagnosis.
On Davina McCall’s Begin Again podcast, she shared: “I told him, and we both shed tears. I assured him, ‘Whatever needs to be done, I’ll make it happen to get past this. I’m committed to seeing it through.’
Determined to fight, she expressed her readiness to face any challenge that may pop up ahead.
She said that if she has to undergo a surgery to remove a breast, she might also have to face hair loss as a side effect. Additionally, she mentioned that if she has to go through some difficult situation or decision, she will do whatever it takes.
‘I’m going to do what I need to do to get through this.’

Julia pointed out that each person’s experience with cancer varies, as every form of cancer, including breast cancer, is unique.
In our conversation, you’ll meet a friend who has experienced breast cancer. She and I will share experiences, as her cancer and my own were located in distinct areas and exhibited unique behaviors.
‘It’s very complicated. And that’s the reason why the war on cancer hasn’t been won yet.’
2023 found me still standing, a testament to my unwavering resolve two years after battling breast cancer.
Prior to undergoing reconstructive surgery, the news personality had a tumor, along with two lymph nodes and her left breast surgically taken out.
Since then, Julia has shared how her diagnosis significantly transformed her lifestyle. This transformation includes adopting a more balanced diet and giving up alcohol, as she is determined to take every necessary step to ensure her children reach maturity.
