Julia Bradbury, 53, takes a ‘healing’ dip in the ocean as she discusses the importance of finding purpose while battling cancer in emotional post
I’ve found that emotional healing plays a significant role in my personal journey with cancer. As a dedicated follower, I’ve learned this firsthand.
53-year-old Countryfile host received a breast cancer diagnosis in September 2021 and subsequently had a mastectomy to remove the 6 cm tumor from her body.
Julia openly discusses the impact cancer had on her personally, stating that it essentially ‘offered her a new lease on life.’ She found herself ‘overwhelmed by stress’ constantly, primarily due to work.
On a Saturday, the mother of three shared on Instagram about how feelings can influence one’s wellbeing, elaborating on the impact of the illness she experienced.
Julia posted a video of her taking a bracing swim in the sea while wearing a wetsuit, during which she emphasized the significance of maintaining a purpose when battling illness.
Perhaps, one of the strongest aspects contributing to your healing process… doesn’t lie in traditional medicine, but rather stems from your emotions. It originates within you.

On my cancer voyage, I’ve encountered remarkable individuals and gained valuable insights into holistic methods for recovery and healing as a whole person.
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of interviewing @joembracingnutrition during the @ipmcongress, a conference focusing on tailored strategies for healthcare and therapies. We discussed her unique approach in working with cancer patients.
‘She refers to it as a holistic strategy, encompassing regular blood tests, treatment, and collaboration with an oncologist for cancer management. Crucially, it also tackles emotional aspects related to the condition.’
Everyone experiences them, and a significant number of us find ourselves leading busy, stress-filled lives, juggling between phone calls, emails, job demands, family obligations, commuting to work, irregular work hours, and inadequate rest.
She talked about the traits of cancer patients who, remarkably, overcome the illness despite seemingly insurmountable challenges.
Julia went on to say: ‘A compelling motive for existence – perhaps it’s your kids, an unfulfilled aspiration, or the pure pleasure of witnessing a sunrise.’
‘Releasing old, suppressed emotions — letting go of pain you’ve held for too long.
‘Promoting positive emotions — finding joy, laughter, even in dark places.

I make an effort to remember that emotions play a crucial role in wellness. This requires dedication, and it might feel awkward to delve into them… but healing encompasses not only external treatments, but also the profound changes that stir within us as well.
Julia has been open about her experience with cancer since her 2021 diagnosis.
A few short weeks back, she openly displayed the marks left by her mastectomy operation, taking pride in them.
Embracing a tight focus on her lower chest, I, too, perceived those scars as symbols of extraordinary resilience.
In much the same vein as those vessels we see, my scars – whether emotional or physical – are not imperfections meant for hiding, I believe.
She wrote that the tales convey themes of resilience, development, and metamorphosis. Every instance serves as proof of our path and fortitude.
In a straightforward manner, Julia openly discussed the time she shared with her husband, Gerard Cunningham, that she had been diagnosed with cancer approximately four years back.
In an episode of Davina McCall’s Begin Again podcast, she shared: “I told him, and we wept. I promised, ‘Whatever needs to be done to overcome this, I will do it.’

Determined to fight, she expressed her readiness to face any challenge that may pop up ahead.
‘Should I need to undergo a mastectomy, I’d also have to accept hair loss. Regardless of what I must face, I’m prepared to do so,’ she expressed.
‘I’m going to do what I need to do to get through this.’
Julia said fighting cancer is not the same for everyone.
She explained: ‘Every type of cancer is different. Every type of breast cancer is different.
You may meet a friend who has battled breast cancer, and we’ll share our experiences over a conversation. Notably, she and I had distinct types of tumors located in different areas, which exhibited unique behaviors.
‘It’s very complicated. And that’s the reason why the war on cancer hasn’t been won yet.’

Julia is a mother to her thirteen-year-old son, Zephyr, as well as her eight-year-old twin daughters, Xanthe and Zena. She is married to Gerard, who works in real estate development.
In the year 2023, she expressed her resilience in continuing to live, marking two years since her breast cancer diagnosis.
Prior to undergoing reconstructive surgery, the news reporter and television host underwent a procedure to remove a tumor, along with two lymph nodes and her left breast.
Since then, Julia has shared that her diagnosis significantly altered the course of her life. This transformation led her to embrace a more balanced diet and abstain from alcohol, as she is determined to take every step necessary to ensure her children reach adulthood.
