In the year 2000, Joan Stanley, portrayed by Judi Dench, finds herself peacefully retired. However, her tranquil existence is shattered as MI5 accuses her of sharing intelligence with Communist Russia, causing an unexpected upheaval in her life.
The suspenseful spy novel alternates between the years 2000 and 1938, portraying Sophie Cookson’s character Joan as a physicist at Cambridge University. She becomes romantically entangled with young communist Leo Galich (Tom Hughes), a decision that eventually forces her to confront a difficult choice: either betray her nation and loved ones, or risk everything to protect them.
