Jude Law’s 24-Year-Old WW2 Gem Now Streaming on Paramount+
24 years following its original release, the underappreciated masterpiece featuring Oscar-nominated performer Jude Law has found a new streaming platform – Paramount+. This World War II film, titled “Enigma,” can now be streamed online.
Among the recent releases on Paramount’s streaming platform is “Enemy at the Gates”, which debuted on June 1st. The 2001 film marks another Lee title to join Paramount+, with his earlier critically acclaimed thriller that premiered in 1999 also now available on the service, having been added in March.
Enemy at the Gates Is Based On A World War II Novel
Under the guidance of esteemed French director Jean-Jacques Annaud, the film titled “Enemy at the Gates” features Jude Law joining forces with Joseph Fiennes, Ed Harris, Rachel Weisz, and Bob Hoskins. This cinematic work is based on William Craig’s novel, “The Battle for Stalingrad,” which delves into one of World War II’s most crucial conflicts that took place between 1942 and 1943.
In this reinterpretation, Vasily Zaitsev, a renowned Russian sharpshooter and hero of the Soviet Union, is portrayed by law. As Danilov (Fiennes), a cunning political officer, appoints Vasily to lead his publicity effort, their bond is tested when they both develop feelings for Tania Chernova (Weisz), a female soldier. Vasily encounters his toughest test yet when he engages in a sniping duel with the Nazi command’s top marksman, Major Erwin König (Harris).
Initially, the film “Enemy at the Gates” received mixed reviews from critics upon its debut, scoring 54% on Rotten Tomatoes. Furthermore, it had difficulty gaining traction at the box office, generating only $97 million worldwide compared to its production budget of $68 million. Nevertheless, over time, it has gained a reputation as a cult classic, receiving an impressive 82% score on Rotten Tomatoes’ Popcornmeter. Interestingly, this movie was launched during the peak of Jude Law’s acting career, having been nominated for Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for “The Talented Mr. Ripley” and receiving a Best Actor nomination for another film.
In his upcoming movie, Leonardo DiCaprio will tackle a highly debated character as he assumes the role of Vladimir Putin. Titled “The Wizard of the Kremlin”, the film primarily revolves around Paul Dano’s character, Vadim Baranov, and his journey from being a young Soviet artist to a powerful government figure. The cast includes Jeffrey Wright from “The Batman” and Academy Award-winning actress Alicia Vikander. Filming for this movie was completed this past spring under the direction of Olivier Assayas.
In the latest episode, Law made an appearance in the much-admired Disney+ sci-fi production, “Star Wars: Skeleton Crew.” Here, he takes on the role of a pirate captain who has undergone Jedi training. Despite the show’s impressive rating (92% on Rotten Tomatoes), it hasn’t been renewed for another season as of now. However, the creators, Jon Watts and Christopher Ford, have shown interest in developing more episodes for this series.
