As a film enthusiast with years of experience under my belt, I must say that Jude Law’s latest project, “The Order,” is nothing short of captivating. The man has always been a chameleon on screen, and his portrayal of Terry Husk in this historical crime film is no exception.

Jude Law has revealed he gorged on ‘late night ice-cream’ as part of his transformation into a bloated Henry VIII.

In conversation with The Sunday Times, the 51-year-old actor from Closer shared that his transformation for the historical drama marked his “toughest makeover to date,” and he reflected on some challenging phases in his professional journey.

In this role, Jude Law portrays a somber version of King Henry VIII, who was heavily overweight (approximately 28 stones) and required assistance from nine individuals to mount his horse due to his weakened condition. Sharing the screen with Alicia Vikander, who depicts Henry’s sixth wife Katherine Parr, in this production.

Lifting the lid on how he managed to gain weight for the role, he said: ‘It was a process.

As an ardent admirer, I found myself drawn to Henry, much like one recognizes Charlie Chaplin or Father Christmas from their distinct silhouettes. Once the shape is spotted, the mind automatically fills in many details. Intrigued by this resemblance, I decided to grow a beard, immersing myself in his essence. I gathered bodysuits, clothes, added weights to my legs, and even modified my shoes to master his unique gait, striving to embody him authentically.

Due to having just four months to prepare, I wasn’t able to gain my usual amount of weight, but I certainly indulged in plenty of food – late-night pasta and ice cream being my go-to choices. As a result, my face appeared larger than normal.

He added bluntly that sometimes he would think of him as a ‘paraplegic gorilla’ as if he had a lot of power but couldn’t move, in a way that made him ‘weirdly helpless’.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I wholeheartedly concur with the acting legend’s perspective that Firebrand subtly delves into the harrowing reality of surviving domestic abuse. In this gripping tale, my character, initially a shining beacon of hope, metamorphoses into a once-respected gangster whose luster has faded and who now finds himself entangled in a downward spiral.

As a devoted admirer, I proudly hail from the vibrant city of London, specifically Lewisham, and throughout the ’90s and the early 2000s, I found myself basking in the limelight of Hollywood. My unforgettable roles in iconic films such as The Talented Mr. Ripley, Closer, Cold Mountain, Road to Perdition, and AI, have left an indelible mark on the cinematic landscape.

In 2004, he took on the role of Alfie Cartwright in the romantic comedy remake named Alfie. For this part, Jude received a payment of approximately £6 million. However, he openly acknowledged that he might have been overpaid for it.

Just moments after that, I found myself being the subject of a Chris Rock joke during the Oscars, where he likened me to Tom Cruise – a comparison that had me beaming from ear to ear!

The comedian quipped about why a particular person seems to be in all movies from the past four years, but Jude shared that he found it rather troubling.

‘The attention cools off if your movies are not making a ton of money.

There’s a clear hierarchy determining who gets priority when it comes to assignments, and if work isn’t flowing as abundantly as before, you might need to think about your own preferences for future actions.

In August, Jude’s latest production titled “The Order,” a historical crime film, made its debut at the Venice Film Festival. You can catch it streaming soon on Amazon Prime Video.

At the Festival, Jude’s portrayal of Terry Husk, an ex-FBI agent grappling with a neo-Nazi group The Order in reality, earned a prolonged seven-minute applause.

He said of his character: ‘There was a sort of lived-in quality to him that I enjoyed.

In my interactions with all the agents I spoke to, the topic of facial hair came up frequently. Notably, each one sported a mustache. As a result, I found myself in a situation where growing a mustache seemed inevitable.

Also starring are Alison Oliver, Tye Sheridan, Jurnee Smollett, and Nicholas Hoult.

In a role, Nicholas portrays Bob Mathews, a prominent figure leading the white supremacist group as The Order’s chief in the year 1983, who was an American neo-Nazi.

As a devoted admirer, I can share that Justin Kurzel, the mastermind behind our movie, provided us, the actors, with a personalized ‘manifesto’ for our characters. This manifesto included various tasks we were meant to accomplish.

‘I just found out on the boat here – one of Jude’s tasks was to follow me for a day!’ he said.

‘He was trailing me for a day when I landed in Calgary.’

The Order is based on the 1989 biography The Silent Brotherhood by Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt.

It was written by Zach Baylin and distributed by Prime Video (though Amazon MGM Studios).

Despite being a Prime Video production, Vertical has secured some rights to the movie and plans to debut it in select cinemas on December 6, 2024.

At The Order’s Venice Film Festival press conference, Jude spoke about the importance of the film at a time when far-right ideologies are rising again.

He remarked, “Unfortunately, its significance is clearly evident.” He explained that it seemed crucial to create this work at this particular moment in time. He found it intriguing to discover something from the past that shares a meaningful connection with our current times.

Director Justin concurred with Law’s viewpoint, emphasizing that the movie’s similarities to our current world were a significant factor in making it an intriguing project for him.

‘It’s always an extraordinary thing when you find a piece of writing or event from the past that has some sort of perspective that can have a conversation with today’s politics. That’s a rare gem. So, we felt that there was a lot that was being said about today.’
