Jude Law reveals 2004 remake was a “bad move”
As a fan who has followed Jude Law‘s illustrious career, it’s fascinating to revisit his thoughts on the controversial remake of “Alfie.” It’s not every day we get an insight into an actor’s regrets and self-reflection, especially one as talented as Mr. Law.
As a gaming aficionado reminiscing about roles, I can’t help but share my thoughts on the revamp of “Alfie,” a movie where I stepped into the shoes of the main character back in 2004.
The romantic comedy draws inspiration from Michael Caine’s 1966 film of the same title, featuring a charming rogue (played by Law) who finds himself questioning his carefree, single lifestyle.
Alfie struggled to meet expectations, bringing in only about half of its global budget and garnering negative reviews from critics. In a conversation with GQ, Law himself labeled the film as a misstep for his acting career.
As a gamer, I found myself in an unbeatable spot at that moment due to another nomination for the Oscar, following the success of Cold Mountain. Yet, looking back, choosing Alfie as my next project right after that, seemed like a questionable decision.
The actor shared that the finished version of the film wasn’t as rough or intense as he had envisioned. He expressed that it didn’t quite reach the level of depth and seemed somewhat overly sweet or campy to him.
Looking back, I believe the project was overpriced, and I may have been compensated more than I initially realized. At the time, I regretted taking on a role that seemed to cater to the romantic lead and heartthrob image, but unfortunately, it didn’t resonate with audiences.
When questioned about whether the poor reception affected his self-assurance, Law acknowledged: “Indeed, I believe it may have.” He continued: “Everyone experiences setbacks, everyone encounters failures. Yes, I think it did. Moreover, it taught me that at the start of one’s career, there is immense curiosity and many are eager to engage with you.
After experiencing a few failures, they tend to lose focus and shift their attention elsewhere. At the same time, another part of you is considering, “Alright, what can I do to regain their attention again?
After his exceptional performance as Dane in the 2009 production of Hamlet, law managed to regain focus, with the show running for a span of seven months on both the West End and Broadway.
After that, he’s appeared in various productions spanning from Marvel to Fantastic Beasts, and the forthcoming Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, due to air on Disney+ next month.
