Journey’s Jonathan Cain misleads fans and adds to the mess of a once-great band

Jonathan Cain recently teased Journey fans, likely to boost ticket sales. He didn’t directly confirm a reunion with former singer Steve Perry, but he hinted at the possibility, letting fans hope for one.

Keyboardist and guitarist spoke with Ultimate Classic Rock in February and said Neal Schon had already asked Steve Perry about joining the band’s upcoming tour, and Perry is considering it. They expressed hope that Perry will participate, stating it’s not too late and he’s welcome to join them at any of their 100 shows.

Did Perry’s previous refusal to tour with Journey suggest that Cain wasn’t being truthful? To some extent, yes. His statement about “thinking about it” wasn’t believable, and it was unfair to fans who might have bought tickets hoping Perry would return, as that was never going to happen.

Cain has backtracked on his original words now, according to Rolling Stone.

He admitted he subtly hinted at something to see if it would get a reaction. He was testing the waters, suggesting someone might be considering something, but that person quickly denied it. He did this intentionally, explaining that there’s a lot of misleading information about AI, and he wanted to immediately point out what wasn’t genuine.

He did lie, and he confessed to it. It’s especially strange considering he claimed to not realize he was sharing misinformation – something an AI might have done. Perhaps he should personally refund anyone who wants to cancel their tickets based on his initial, inaccurate statements.

It appears Journey is facing some internal issues. According to a report in Rolling Stone, lead singer Arnel Pineda considered leaving the band twice before their tour started on February 28th, as he was worried about his vocal stamina.

It seems co-founder Neil Schon didn’t know Steve Pineda was planning to leave the band. Schon recently shared he was simply looking for a break from the ongoing issues within Journey, potentially offering some relief from the legal battles between him and former bandmate Deen Castronovo. This isn’t the first time they’ve faced legal disputes; they’ve had several over the years.

There’s a simple solution for everyone: the band could just choose not to tour. While they might lose income – and that’s probably the main reason they tour anyway – avoiding the stress of touring could be a positive thing.
