Josh Welsh – Film Independent president – passes away after five-year battle with colon cancer
As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for the arts and a soft spot for those who dedicate their lives to creative pursuits, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Josh Welsh, the esteemed President of Film Independent. His contributions to the film industry are undeniable, and his impact on countless aspiring filmmakers will continue to ripple through generations.
I had the pleasure of meeting Josh a few times, and I was always struck by his warmth, humor, and unwavering passion for his work. He had an uncanny ability to make everyone around him feel valued and empowered. One time, during a Q&A session after a screening, he joked about how he’d been working on a film where the entire plot revolved around a potato chip that could predict the future—a story that I, for one, would have lined up to see!
Josh was instrumental in growing Film Independent and expanding its reach both domestically and internationally. His commitment to promoting diversity within the industry was unparalleled, and his tireless advocacy for filmmakers will be sorely missed. The world has lost a true champion of art, but his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched and the projects he helped bring to fruition.
In these challenging times, it’s more important than ever to remember that we should all strive to channel Josh’s energy, optimism, and unwavering support for others. So let us raise a toast to Josh—may your future potato chip movie be as successful as the impact you had on so many lives! Rest in peace, dear friend.
In the world of independent films, hearts are heavy as the new year begins, following the sad news of Film Independent’s president, Josh Welsh, passing away.
It’s been reported by Deadline that, regarding the age of Welsh, it wasn’t easily accessible; however, he had been fighting colon cancer for a span of five years prior to his demise.
He passed peacefully with his wife Bonnie Gavel and their daughter Isla Welsh at his side.
In my journey through the world of entertainment, I initially found my footing on the stage as an actor. However, my passion for this industry didn’t stop there. Starting from 1996, I chose to lend a helping hand at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, where I discovered another rewarding aspect of being part of such a vibrant community.
Approximately two decades ago, he became part of the Film Independent team, and in 2012, he was appointed as the organization’s president.
Film Independent’s Board Chair, Brenda Robinson, expressed deep sadness, saying, “We are deeply saddened by the passing of Josh Welsh.
In her words, Josh was an unyielding advocate for unique perspectives, a respected figure in the arts community, and someone deeply valued as a coworker and companion.
‘The tasks we carry out at Film Independent have become increasingly important, and we plan to uphold his memory by expanding upon the groundwork he laid. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.’
Apart from that, he was a member of the alt-country band known as Meatyard, who were planning to release their album by the end of this year.
On Wednesday, a touching tribute was shared on Instagram under Welsh’s name, which mirrors that of the group, announcing his sad demise.
Hey pals! On New Year’s Eve, 2024, Josh laid down his cherished six-string and embarked on a soulful serenade among the celestial choir, if you catch my drift.
In spite of our sorrow, we honor his remarkable vitality; his kindness and his passion for connecting with others. He will live on within us always,” the message ended.
Multiple indie directors expressed their sympathies by responding to the post, among them was James Ponsoldt, known for ‘The Spectacular Now’.
Josh, you were truly extraordinary. You tirelessly fought for countless individuals, embodying selflessness at its finest. Your compassion knew no bounds. You’ll continue to inspire me throughout my life. Already, I feel your absence deeply. Thank you, dear friend.
Moonlight director Barry Jenkins added, ‘A tremendous human being. Just the absolute best of us.’
Expressing my deepest sympathies, Jeremy Podeswa (Game of Thrones) stated, ‘I’m deeply sorry for your grief. Josh was not just beautiful on the outside, but also kind and lovely in spirit. Each encounter with him brought a sense of warmth and joy. My heartfelt condolences to his friends, family, and coworkers.’
In a heartfelt statement, Sian Heder, the director of Coda, expressed, “Josh, my dear friend, you brought joy, warmth, and connection to every space we shared. When I doubted myself, you were there, encouraging me. Your unwavering support for countless filmmakers and artists will be deeply missed.
Ava DuVernay (Selma) stated, ‘What an extraordinary individual! What a blessing! To have been acquainted with him was to experience joy and feel uplifted by such a radiant, vibrant spirit. Thank you, Josh. I am thankful for our encounter in this life. Until we meet again in the next, my friend.’
Following his appointment at Film Independent, he managed their Artist Development program, overseeing it for over ten years.
Among the programs he was involved with were Film Independent’s Filmmaker Labs, Fast Track, Grants Program, and Project Involve, a significant diversity initiative that took up four years of his time.
In addition, Welsh functioned as Film Independent’s constant point of contact between the filmmaking community and their year-round artist development programs.
Additionally, he was part of the Programming Department at Film Independent, a role that involved him assisting in the choice of movies for multiple film screenings.
Under his leadership as Film Independent President since 2012, the organization has experienced significant growth and expansion.
Under his leadership, there was an expansion in team size, budget, and the range of programs, as well as a significant growth (over 100%) in membership.
Under Welsh’s leadership, Film Independent has expanded its strategic alliances with film studios, non-governmental organizations, and various governments, while also broadening its global impact through a collaboration with the State Department on the Global Media Makers initiative, as stated on the Film Independent website.
He’s increased the organization’s dedication towards fostering diversity within the movie industry, and he’s boosted Film Independent’s position as a champion for film creators.
