Josh Hartnett reveals why he traded L.A. and New York for a quieter life in England

As a seasoned film critic with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that Josh Hartnett‘s journey is both inspiring and thought-provoking. The 46-year-old star of M. Night Shyamalan’s latest movie “Trap” has made a bold choice to prioritize his personal life over Hollywood stardom, a decision that resonates deeply with me.

20 years later, Josh Harnett has shared insights on why he chose to part ways with LA during the height of his stardom.

The actor in M. Night Shyamalan’s latest film “Trap,” who is 46 years old, expressed in an interview with The Guardian published on Sunday that he didn’t want his life to be consumed by work. At that point in time, it seemed as if one had to completely dedicate oneself. Witnessing the fate of some individuals during that era, I didn’t desire that outcome for myself.

1. Harnett’s career took off in Hollywood during the late ’90s after captivating audiences with significant parts in independent films like “The Faculty” and “The Virgin Suicides.” Subsequently, he landed starring roles in the 2001 films “Black Hawk Down,” “Pearl Harbor,” and “40 Days and 40 Nights.”

I must admit, despite the allure of the limelight that accompanied those high-profile roles, he never quite embraced it. The constant stream of offers for hero or heartthrob characters didn’t appeal to him either. Following his stint in those large-scale productions, he chose to retreat from the public eye, returning to his beloved Minnesota and severing connections with his agents. Approximately 18 months later, he reentered the industry, turning down big-budget offers and instead opting for roles in low-key indie films.

Actor Daniel Day-Lewis, known for his role in “Pearl Harbor,” currently resides in the United Kingdom with his spouse, Tamsin Egerton, who is also a British actor. They have lived there since securing a marriage visa in 2021, having previously spent years traveling between the UK and New York. The couple met on the set of Roland Joffe’s film “The Lovers” in 2011 and began dating the following year. Their first child was born in 2015. In more recent times, they have made their home in the British countryside. Surprisingly, they had secretly tied the knot in 2021 before publicly revealing it in 2022.

In simpler terms, Harnett mentions that living in a quiet village allows him to spend more quality time with his children compared to his experiences in New York City and Los Angeles.

1. In New York and L.A., it seems everyone is keen on discussing careers, according to him. However, in the U.K., he stated that no one pays much attention.

As a mother of four, I’ve come to realize that time seems to pass by more quickly than ever before. I never imagined the amount of responsibilities and activities that come with raising such a large family. Despite the constant busyness, it feels as if less is happening in the grand scheme of things. Yet, it’s during these moments that the truly important aspects of life unfold.

1. In “Trap,” Hartnett plays the role of a devoted father who takes his daughter to a pop star’s concert, but director Shyamalan is famous for unexpected plot twists (similar to “The Sixth Sense” and “The Village”). And the film’s trailer clearly hints at a twist: The father is actually a notorious serial killer, referred to as the Butcher.

“Trap” hits movie theaters in the U.S. on Friday.
