Josh Brolin says he’ll “quit acting” if Dune director Denis Villeneuve doesn’t get an Oscar nod
As a film enthusiast with decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Josh Brolin is one of those rare actors who truly embodies the characters he plays. His dedication to his craft and unwavering loyalty towards certain directors, such as Denis Villeneuve, is nothing short of commendable.
Josh Brolin, renowned for his portrayal of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, holds director Denis Villeneuve in high regard. In fact, he admires him greatly. Given that they worked together on the 2015 film “Sicario,” when Villeneuve invited Brolin to join his “Dune” movie projects, Brolin was quick to accept without a second thought. As Brolin put it during an interview with Graham Bensinger, “I didn’t even need to read the offer, because it’s Denis, and I adore Denis.” The bond between them was such that he would do any role with Villeneuve.
In the film “Dune” and its sequel “Dune: Part Two,” released in 2021 and 2024 respectively, Gurney Halleck was portrayed by Jason Momoa. He served as a faithful servant to House Atreides and played a guiding role for young Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet. In the first movie, “Dune: Part One,” Denis Villeneuve’s direction did not receive an Oscar nomination for Best Director. If this trend continues in the future, Momoa has stated that he will no longer participate in the franchise.
Brolin expressed to Entertainment Weekly that if he doesn’t receive a nomination this year, he plans to retire from acting. He found the movie superior to the first one, describing it as so powerful that it felt like his mind was shattered upon watching it. In his opinion, Denis is a remarkable filmmaker who deserves recognition by the Academy Awards if they are to hold any significance at all.
As a movie buff, let me share my take on the anticipated sequel, “Dune: Part Two.” Unlike its predecessor, this installment seems to hit the mark, primarily due to its faithful adaptation of Frank Herbert’s latter half of the 1965 novel, “Dune.” The narrative gains a substantial boost in momentum, making it a more compelling watch.
Was James Cameron angry with Josh Brolin after he turned down a role in Avatar?
For several years, Brolin has been a fixture in Hollywood, maintaining positive ties with certain directors but experiencing some turbulence with others, possibly including James Cameron. Brolin is unsure if Cameron harbored resentment towards him for declining a role in Avatar, but he has hinted at this before. In 2017, when speaking to Esquire, Brolin stated, “If I don’t want to do Avatar, I won’t do Avatar. James Cameron is calling me all sorts of names. Whatever.” If James Cameron were to approach him and ask why he said that, Brolin would reply, “Because it actually happened.
When Brolin discussed the topic again with Bensinger, he adopted a more moderate tone. He mentioned, “Apparently, he was upset,” but added, “I can see why, as when someone has an idea or position, and they hold influence… people often feel incredibly grateful for their generosity.
I don’t know if that’s the case with him because I don’t know him well enough. But it was based on the [project]. It wasn’t based on him.
If director Denis Villeneuve receives an Oscar nomination and James Cameron doesn’t interfere with Brolin’s acting career out of personal vengeance, then we can expect more roles for him in the future.
