Josh Brolin reveals James Cameron’s shock reaction to him turning down Avatar: The Way of Water role
As a seasoned moviegoer with decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that the world of film is as unpredictable as a rollercoaster ride at an amusement park. One minute you’re laughing with the characters, the next you’re on the edge of your seat holding on tight, and then suddenly, you find yourself twisting and turning in unexpected directions.
According to reports, Josh Brolin disclosed the surprised response of director James Cameron when Brolin declined an offer for a role in the sequel to Avatar titled “The Way of Water.
56-year-old actor from Men In Black III declined an offer to play a fresh character in the 2022 blockbuster hit, explaining that it was 13 years since James Cameron’s initial film, which held the record for highest-grossing movie ever, was released.
In a recent conversation with Graham Bensinger on his In Depth podcast, I shared that Oscar-winning filmmaker James Cameron, at 70 years old, appeared to be upset when I declined the opportunity to join the cast.
He mentioned that the person seemed upset. I can relate, as when one holds a thought or position and possesses influence and authority, it becomes common for others to express deep appreciation for any assistance they receive from us.
‘I didn’t have a close relationship with him to know for sure, but based on our professional interaction within the project, I can say that my observations and opinions about his behavior were not influenced by him as an individual.’
Brolin declined to comment on the exact reason he turned down the sequel.
The movie “Avatar: The Way of Water,” featuring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang and Kate Winslet, earned an impressive $2.320 billion at the box office, making it the third highest-grossing film ever.
A sequel, Avatar: Fire & Ash is set for release on December 19, 2025.
Instead of typically reaching box office history with huge opening weekends, the initial Avatar followed a unique path, amassing its record-breaking earnings gradually over time.
In 2008, midway through July, the movie “The Dark Knight” set the record for highest opening weekend box office earnings with a staggering $158.4 million. It eventually grossed approximately $533.3 million domestically and more than $1 billion globally.
The immense success of Avatar ($2.92 billion) can primarily be attributed to its persistent popularity that is rarely witnessed at the box office. This sustained appeal enabled it to hold the number one position uninterruptedly for an impressive eight consecutive weeks.
In Avatar: The Way of Water, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) and his companion Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) relocated their family to reside with a different Na’vi tribe that dwelled along the coast and spent a significant amount of time in the ocean. James Cameron utilized underwater photography to enhance the spectacular visual effects.
Cameron said of the 2025 sequel: ‘The fire will be represented by the “Ash People.”
‘I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.
In the initial movies, you’ll find quite a few bleak portrayals of humans contrasted with uplifting depictions of the Na’vi. For Avatar 3, however, we plan to flip this dynamic.
He mentioned that we’ll delve into uncharted territories, all the while advancing the narrative of our principal characters. To put it simply, he suggested that the upcoming segments are bound to outshine the previous ones; the initial parts served as a prologue, a setup before the main event unfolds.
