A member of the Duggar family, known from the TLC show “19 Kids and Counting,” is now accused of sexually abusing a child.
Joseph Duggar, age 31 and part of the large Duggar family, was arrested Wednesday in Arkansas. Authorities suspect he committed sexual abuse against a minor in Florida. The Bay County Sheriff’s Office reported receiving a claim of past abuse involving Duggar and a now 14-year-old girl, who says the abuse began when she was nine years old. This arrest comes after Joseph’s brother, Josh Duggar, was convicted of similar crimes.
Police say the teenager claims Duggar sexually assaulted her in 2020 while they were both on vacation in Panama City Beach. She alleges he touched her private areas and rubbed her thighs.
The victim stated that Duggar eventually apologized for the abuse and stopped the unwanted touching. Law officials said Duggar also confessed to the girl’s father and to detectives in his home state of Arkansas. The Tontitown Police Department confirmed Duggar’s arrest, stating they acted on an arrest warrant from the Bay County Sheriff’s Office.
The former reality TV star faces charges of sexually abusing a child under 12 and engaging in lewd behavior. He is currently held in a Washington County jail and will be transferred to Florida to face the charges. He hasn’t yet responded to requests for comment.
Joseph Duggar and his large family – all of whose first names start with the letter J – unexpectedly became reality TV stars in 2008 with the debut of TLC’s “19 Kids and Counting.” The show documented their lives, focusing on their strict Christian beliefs. However, the family’s wholesome image was shattered in 2015 when their eldest son, Josh, was accused of sexually abusing five girls, including four of his sisters, when he was a teenager. As a result, the show was canceled that same year.
Let’s address the elephant in the room. Before all this current legal drama, Josh faced a deeply disturbing conviction. Back in December 2021, he was found guilty of possessing and receiving child pornography, a crime that rightly earned him a hefty 12 and a half year prison sentence in 2022. Sadly, his attempts to appeal that conviction were unsuccessful, with the Supreme Court denying his request just last June. It’s a crucial part of the background that unfortunately can’t be ignored when considering everything else happening now.

Jill Duggar and her husband, Derick Dillard, recently spoke with The Times about their belief that reality TV needs better safeguards for children. They also shared how their family has responded to a popular book about their experiences.
Fifteen years after “19 Kids and Counting” first aired, the show, the Duggar family, and their strong beliefs connected to the Institute in Basic Life Principles came under intense examination in the Prime Video documentary series, “Shiny Happy People: Duggar Family Secrets.”
Jill Dillard, one of the older Duggar sisters and a survivor of abuse by her brother Josh, shared her story in a 2023 documentary series.
She emphasized the importance of protecting and caring for victims, stating she wants to have a voice in how their stories are shared and handled.
