As a long-time gamer and horror movie enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about the upcoming reboot of “Scare Tactics.” Having grown up during the early 2000s when prank shows were all the rage, I fondly remember the original series that aired on Syfy back in 2003. With its horror movie-style pranks and various hosts like Shannen Doherty, Stephen Baldwin, and Tracy Morgan, it was a thrilling blend of fear and laughter.
In 2003, Syfy aired “Scare Tactics,” a prank show created by Scott Hallock and Kevin Healey during the height of prank show popularity. The series, which included hosts such as Shannen Doherty, Stephen Baldwin, and Tracy Morgan, ran for five seasons until 2013. Since then, there have been plans to reboot the show by Blumhouse, but it appears that project has yet to progress.
In each episode, a new victim or group of victims encountered a terrifying prank inspired by horror movie tropes, complete with authentic makeup and costumes. The pranks and their editing were styled after genuine horror films to amplify the fear during the TV broadcast.
As a longtime fan of prank shows, I’m thrilled to hear that the new iteration of USA Network’s series will continue the tradition of turning everyday people into the stars of their own horror movies. Having grown up watching shows where reality and fear were intertwined with humor, I can only imagine the excitement and trepidation these unsuspecting individuals must feel as they are thrust into this unique experience.
Corie Henson, NBCUniversal Entertainment’s Executive Vice President of Unscripted Content, previewed the imminent partnership, promising ample amounts of laughter, startling surprises, and extravagant antics.
As one of the most visionary creators of the day, there is nothing Jordan Peele can’t do. We’re honored to be making our first unscripted series together. This brilliant reimagining of the classic ‘Scare Tactics’ has it all – laughs, jump scares and outrageous moments. In the hands of Jordan and Monkeypaw, you never know what’s coming next!”
Friends and family create the setup: unsuspecting individuals are drawn into vividly personalized scenarios designed to elicit fear. These pranks on “Scare Tactics” promise an intricate level of complexity.
The series release date hasn’t been announced, but we can expect it this autumn. Considering its spooky atmosphere, it might debut on USA Network around late September or early October, perfect for Halloween viewing.
