Jordan North takes a brutal swipe at his former Radio 1 show as he boasts about rise in Capital listening figures during Saturday Kitchen appearance
As a dedicated follower of the radio industry, I must admit, Jordan North’s recent boast about his Capital Breakfast show beating BBC Radio 1 has stirred quite a bit of excitement within me. Having spent over a decade at the BBC, Jordan has certainly paid his dues and earned his stripes.
Jordan North made a pointed remark about his previous BBC Radio 1 program, proudly highlighting the audience numbers for his current Capital Breakfast show.
The radio DJ, 34, quit his Radio 1 show back in February after 10 years at the station after he was offered to replace Roman Kemp’s position at Capital.
Yet, it seemed like Jordan was suggesting tension with his BBC Radio 1 superiors, as he exclaimed triumphantly, “We’re outdoing Radio 1!” during his Saturday Kitchen visit.
On the cooking show, Jordan teamed up with his fellow hosts Sian Welby (aged 38) and Chris Stark (aged 37). He shared that the audience numbers for the show have grown significantly since he started hosting in April.
Afterward, he mentioned that more 15-24-year-olds tune into their morning program compared to Radio 1.
He told host Matt Tebbutt: ‘Since we started in April the figures are up so we are doing alright.’
Matt continued, saying, “The audience is approximately three million,” to which Jordan responded, “That’s almost half a million more we’ve gained.
‘We are beating Radio 1 on younger audiences as well,’ he added as Sian let out a cheer.
Continuing to boast he said: ‘We have got more 15 to 20-year-olds listening to Capital Breakfast,’ as Matt joked: ‘You know your figures and he winked and agreed: ‘Oh, I know.’
In a heart-pounding moment, I couldn’t help but cheer silently as Chris attempted to guide the discussion. Jordan, with a secretive twinkle in his eye, repeated his wink and cupped his hands around his mouth, shouting triumphantly, “Overthrowing Radio 1 is our mission!
Hinting at a feud, Matt probed: ‘Did you leave on good terms?’
With a chuckle, Jordan gestured above him, reassuringly saying “We’re good, we’re good,” and then loudly declaring, “We’re winning!” again.
Earlier reports indicated that Jordan, who was subsequently replaced by Jaime Laing, found himself taken aback upon learning about his exit from Radio 1.
According to The Mirror, he was taken aback by the news of his exit from the show, as details regarding his departure were announced unexpectedly and without his prior awareness, amidst disorganized circumstances.
The article stated that he had unknowingly aired his final episode of the program, as his departure was publicized later on.
For quite some time, there seemed to be a significant build-up of tension due to the anticipation surrounding his decision to depart, as he had informed the producers of his intent to leave.
Later on, in April, Jordan asserted that he hadn’t initially intended to depart, but changed his mind upon receiving an offer to replace Roman. He admitted, ‘Refusing Capital Radio isn’t really an option!’
He went on to tell The Sun: ‘I know that sounds corny but it’s a massive breakfast show. I told three people, because I had to keep it quiet, and they all said, “Go for it'”.
As a seasoned lifestyle connoisseur, I’m fortunate to be surrounded by a vibrant circle of friends within the Radio 1 community. Whenever I reach out to my dear friend, Vick Hope, she always responds warmly and graciously. In fact, before our first show together, I received a flurry of encouraging texts from everyone in our team.
Adding: ‘Greg James said “Good luck”, They pit us as rivals but really we’re all mates.’
