Jonathan Pryce’s “gripping” new Wales-set detective drama gets first look in tense trailer

Sky has released a first trailer and some preview images for Under Salt Marsh, a new detective drama starring Jonathan Pryce and set in Wales. The network calls the show “gripping” and plans to launch it in 2026.

Kelly Reilly, known from Yellowstone, and Rafe Spall, from Trying, join Pryce in this series. It’s set in the seemingly close-knit Welsh town of Morfa Halen, which is shaken by a terrible crime.

The six-episode series begins with a massive storm approaching the coast. Jackie Ellis, a former detective now teaching, uncovers something surprising that brings back painful memories of a three-year-old unsolved case – a case that previously ruined her career and damaged her family’s trust in her.

What to Read Next

Jackie unexpectedly teams up again with her former police partner, Eric Bull (Spall), and finds herself investigating a case that threatens to unravel the secrets of Morfa Halen.

I’m really hooked on this story! It’s about these characters who have to face a town full of hidden truths and people still hurting from past losses. And they’re running out of time, because a huge storm is coming that threatens to bury everything – the secrets and the pain – forever. It’s so tense!

Sky describes Under Salt Marsh as a compelling story that combines a moody, suspenseful crime plot with a heartfelt look at how people overcome challenges and support each other.

The Sky Original crime drama stars Pryce as Solomon Bevan. Claire Oakley created, wrote, and directed the series, which also features a strong supporting cast including Mark Stanley (known from Happy Valley and Trigger Point), Brian Gleeson (Bad Sisters), Harry Lawtey (Industry), Naomi Yang, and Dinita Gohil.

Jonathan Harbottle and Nikita Lalwani joined Oakley as writers for the series Under Salt Marsh, which was also directed by Mary Nighy. Little Door Productions created the series with support from Sky Studios.

Little Door CEO Elwen Rowlands praised the thriller, telling Deadline they were lucky to have such a skilled cast portraying the characters.

Claire’s scripts create a captivating and emotional story about a close-knit community and its relationship with the natural world, all set against the breathtaking scenery of North Wales.

Jonathan Pryce, known for his role in The Crown, is currently appearing in the fifth season of the Apple TV+ series Slow Horses. He recently told Town & Country that he was happy to be back for the new season.

I’ve absolutely loved being a part of this show for all five seasons. It’s been a career highlight, and everything just clicked – the writing was fantastic, the actors were amazing, and the directors really knew how to bring the stories to life.

He also pointed out that adapting a good book into a successful TV series is often difficult, but in this case, both the books by Mick Herron and the series itself are excellent. He sees the series as a great tribute to the author and his work.

Under Salt Marsh will premiere on Sky and the streaming service NOW in 2026.
