The British drama *The Mercy*, featuring Jonathan Bailey and Colin Firth, will soon be taken off a UK streaming service. Here’s what you should know before it’s gone.
The 2018 movie tells the true story of Donald Crowhurst (played by Colin Firth), who tried to sail around the world in 1968 as part of the Golden Globe Race.
The movie, written by Scott Z. Burns and directed by James Marsh, is now streaming on Netflix in the UK, but it will be taken off the platform on October 4th, so you’ll need to watch it soon.

The film features a strong cast, including Rachel Weisz, David Thewlis, Ken Stott, Mark Gatiss, and Andrew Buchan, alongside Firth and Bailey – with Bailey playing the role of Wheeler – and a young Kit Connor.
Although *The Mercy* didn’t perform strongly in theaters, critics generally liked it, giving it a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 82 reviews.

Empire Magazine noted that while the film has a certain reserved quality, it’s surprisingly harsh and powerfully delivered thanks to Colin Firth’s performance. The Arizona Republic described it as a captivating look into the characters’ lives.
According to a review in *The Guardian*, Colin Firth is a compelling choice for the role of Crowhurst, effectively portraying him as a decent, likable, and genuinely courageous and resourceful man.
I was so captivated by Colin Firth’s performance, and the *Financial Times* really hit the nail on the head! They described it as a ‘meltdown measured by the cubic millimetre,’ which is such a brilliant way to put how subtle and powerful he was. It felt like watching a masterclass – a truly guiding performance, like navigating by a star.

While acknowledging the film’s sincerity and hard work, RogerEbert.com found it lacked a clear message, stating it wasn’t sure what it was trying to convey.
A biographical drama is leaving Netflix shortly, and it won’t be the only one. The crime thriller *The Good Liar*, starring Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen, will also be removed from the streaming service next week.
The Mercy is streaming on Netflix until 4 October.
