Jonah Hill (probably) passed on playing The Penguin, paving the way for Colin Farrell

As a fan who has been following the Batman universe for decades, I must admit that “The Penguin” is currently the standout gem among the latest TV offerings. The grounded crime drama, spearheaded by the outstanding performance of Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot, is nothing short of riveting. The recent episode, “Cent’anni,” was a masterpiece that drew in more viewers than any other episode thus far, and I have no doubt that the second half will leave audiences spellbound.

In a surprising turn, “The Penguin” – a spin-off from director Matt Reeves’ film “The Batman,” featuring Colin Farrell as one of Batman’s well-known adversaries – has become one of television’s standout shows. With its gritty crime narrative and powerhouse performances by actors such as Farrell and Cristin Milioti, the series is proving to be a gripping watch. The latest episode, titled “Cent’anni,” was particularly impressive and attracted more viewers than any other episode thus far. Word of the show’s exceptional quality is spreading rapidly, and I can assure you that the second half will leave audiences astounded.

Colin Farrell is receiving a great deal of deserved recognition for his impressive portrayal of Oswald Cobbe, thanks in large part to the skillful work of makeup artist Mike Marino, who has the ability to transform Farrell’s appearance so dramatically that I am always taken aback when I recall it’s actually him beneath the makeup.

Initially, Jonah Hill declined the role of The Batman, as stated by Variety, and it wasn’t a foregone conclusion that Farrell would eventually land the part.

In essence, it’s clear that ‘Variety’ is aware that Hill took on a part in the Batman film; to be precise, they recognize he was given the chance to play either the Penguin or the Riddler, with Paul Dano ultimately portraying the Riddler. Regardless of the role he might have played, The Batman turned out to be a massive hit, and considering the positive reviews for the potential Penguin, Hill might be feeling a bit regretful now.

In other words, although Hill is often linked to comedy roles, it’s worth noting that he has impressive dramatic skills as well. This is evident in his two Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations, one for the film “Moneyball” and another for “The Wolf of Wall Street.” So, if offered the role of the Penguin, Hill might just surprise us with a convincing portrayal of such a gritty character.

If Hill had played the character of The Penguin instead, he might be in Farrell’s situation, anticipating a likely Emmy nomination and win. However, this is purely speculative at the moment. For now, you can catch new episodes of The Penguin each Sunday on HBO and Max.
