Jon Stewart’s former Daily Show correspondent blasts him for ‘shielding’ Trump rally comic
As I delve into the captivating journey of Jon Stewart, a five-time Peabody winner and a titan in the world of satirical comedy, I can’t help but be deeply moved by his resilience and growth. His experiences, both humbling and humorous, have shaped him into the remarkable figure he is today.
Once more, Jon Stewart, the producer-host of The Daily Show, has faced criticism from his ex-correspondent, Wyatt Cenac. This time, he’s been accused of protecting stand-up comic Tony Hinchcliffe, who performed at a Trump rally.
61-year-old award recipient, Mark Twain Prize laureate, acknowledged during a recent episode of his Comedy Central show on October 28th that he finds the 40-year-old comedian with an insulting style quite amusing. Remarkably, this admiration persists despite the comedian’s past comments about Puerto Rico as a ‘floating island of trash’ and other racially sensitive content.
In a post published on Substack last Sunday, the 48-year-old expressed that they weren’t surprised by Jon’s defense of the comedian who participated in a xenophobic rally. They attributed this stance to the fact that the organizers were responsible for hiring a “comedian for roasting” instead. This situation was disheartening but predictable, given Jon’s professional history.
As an ardent admirer, it seemed like he was safeguarding a jester, whose humor, in a strange twist, provided laughter as a mask for the rally attendees against bigotry. This laughter, in turn, might have made the harsh, hate-filled rhetoric that followed more palatable and digestible.
Wyatt went on to say, “On Monday, the voice Americans rely on didn’t argue for comedy so much as hinted that if racist remarks had amused him, he might have stood with them instead.
Additionally, Cenac expressed his disapproval towards Jon’s stance in support of Joe Rogan, whose podcast has gained an impressive 18.1 million subscribers. However, this backing came despite Rogan facing criticisms for disseminating false information about COVID-19 and a past record of making misogynistic and racist remarks.
In his words, ‘Rogan’ was more concerned about the spread of false information through algorithms rather than the individuals disseminating it, which seems somewhat like fretting over bullets instead of the one pulling the trigger.’ (Grammy-nominated funnyman’s writing)
In a statement, Wyatt explained that the 23-time Emmy winner had supported Dave Chappelle over his transgender jokes due to his belief that Chappelle’s intentions were never harmful and when questioned about inviting Louis CK on The Daily Show following sexual misconduct allegations, he feigned ignorance.
In his distinctive stance, Jon tends to stand by fellow comedians when they face criticism, much like how police officers rally together when one of their own is being investigated for questionable behavior. This is as expressed by Cenac in his writing.
The native New Yorker spoke out while realizing that most people will think of him as ‘that guy who had a bad experience working for Jon Stewart and was the only one dumb enough to speak about it.’
As a lifestyle expert, let me share a personal insight from my past experience working behind the scenes at The Daily Show. In 2011, I was the sole African-American writer on the team and found myself deeply troubled by Jon’s portrayal of Republican Presidential candidate Herman Cain using a minstrel-style impersonation. This act led to an intense confrontation that left quite an impact on me and the show as a whole.
Stewart appeared very protective. As I recall, he reacted by saying something like, “What exactly is your point here? I sense an underlying tone in your speech.” This was his statement according to a 2015 interview on WTF with Marc Maron.
As a lifestyle expert, I found myself expressing my discomfort, saying something like, “I mentioned that the tone was unsettling and evoked memories of Kingfish for me, which bothered me. This seemed to upset him, as he rose from his seat and exclaimed, ‘Enough! I’m finished with you.’ He repeated this phrase several times, growing increasingly loud. The outburst left me questioning whether our professional relationship had come to an end.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d put it this way: Back in 2015, I had an eye-opening experience with a former team member that taught me a valuable lesson. We resolved our differences through emails, and by the grace of time, we managed to patch things up. Fast forward to 2020, I shared my thoughts about this incident on The Breakfast Club, acknowledging its humbling impact on me. And for your information, I’ve extended my contract all the way to the end of 2025.
Jon acknowledged that those experiences were tough and humbling for him, and he had initially been sensitive about them.
‘We think we’re doing the right thing, but we’re not doing it in the right way.’
The actor from The Great North, who left The Daily Show back in 2012, received all three of his Emmys for his writing contributions to the late-night satire program in the years 2009, 2011, and 2012.
Afterward, Wyatt started a late-night satirical comedy series titled Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas. Unfortunately, this show was terminated by HBO in the year 2019, following its completion of two successful seasons.
As a die-hard enthusiast, I can’t help but exclaim that the one and only Mr. Cenac, fresh off his recent triumph in producing and penning “Urkel Saves Santa: The Movie,” has unleashed yet another wave of creativity upon us! His arsenal now includes four magnificent albums and two electrifying stand-up specials that have left us all in awe!
