Jon & Kate Plus 8 star Collin Gosselin, 20, reveals he was ‘discharged’ from the Marines and blames estranged mom
As I delve into the heart-wrenching saga of the Gosselin family, it’s impossible not to feel a deep sense of empathy for all parties involved. Collin, a young man with a promising future, seemed to have been swept away by the whirlwind of fame and fortune that comes with being part of a reality TV show. His transformation into a person struggling with mental health issues is a stark reminder of how the glitz and glamour of stardom can sometimes obscure our humanity.
Colin Gosselin stated that he was dismissed from the Marines because his mother, Kate, had him admitted to a behavioral facility about eight years prior in 2016.
20-year-old former star of Jon & Kate Plus 8, who earlier claimed his mother had forced him out at age 12 to prevent him from disclosing alleged abuse, recently shared his experiences with past institutionalization during an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Tuesday.
In the past year, I had the opportunity to share my insights on Vice TV’s Dark Side of the 2000s. During this discussion, I openly talked about how Kate, in her youth, expressed her anger and frustration towards me in ways that were challenging for me to navigate. Furthermore, I described the environment we grew up in as a ‘dark place,’ offering a unique perspective on our formative years.
During our conversation with ET, he shared that he is no longer serving in the Marines, and he mentioned that he received a discharge.
I had nearly completed my training, just about ready to graduate. Upon reviewing the necessary documents, it was discovered that I had spent some time in an institution during my lifetime.
Collin stated, “Being in a facility is sufficient…for my release. It was simply being in a facility that mattered.”
Instead, he shared with the media that his immediate goal is ‘to contest the verdict’, and further clarified that there are very few aspirations left in his life more important than becoming a United States Marine.
Speaking about his ongoing appeal work, Gosselin mentioned his intention to delve into finance studies this fall when he enrolls at Pennsylvania State University.
Back in July of last year, a representative for Jon Gosselin announced that his son Collin and daughter Hannah, who were granted sole custody to Jon in 2018, had successfully passed a Marine Corps background check, according to Us Weekly.
Prior to joining, the representative made it clear that Colin had to undergo a thorough Marine background check, which included assessments of his mental, physical, and medical health. The official findings of this examination accurately represent the facts.
On Vice TV’s Dark Side of the 2000s, he talked about being sent away at the age of 12 to the institution, and alleged that his mother, Kate, did so to prevent him from discussing how he was being treated at home.
Jon and Kate got married back in 1999, but their union ended with a divorce in 2009. Together they have eight kids: twins Cara and Madelyn who were born in the year 2000, as well as sextuplets – Collin, Hannah, Joel, Aaden, Alexis, and Leah.
Colin explained that he had been planning to inform his teachers that my mom was experiencing some form of mistreatment, which was essentially why she made me leave home. He had begun sharing what was happening at our house with others, as well. (At that time)
I’ve learned from my past experiences that when I try to share what’s happening at home with others, it often leads to complications. This time was no different; as soon as people started to find out, she quickly moved me somewhere where I couldn’t disclose any secrets. It seems like keeping the family’s affairs private is a non-negotiable rule in our household.
Additionally, he claimed that his mother often vented her agitation and disappointment on him by keeping him apart from his other siblings.
Colin conveyed, “I realize my mom was dealing with quite a bit – a divorce, among other challenging situations, which aren’t easy to navigate.”
It seems to me like she may have vented her anger and stress onto me, unintentionally perhaps. I guess I was just unfortunate enough to be present at the time, making me an easy target for her emotions.
Regarding my time spent at the institution, Collin reminisced that it had a profound impact on his mental health, describing it as an extremely bleak and gloomy environment.
‘I was entirely on my own, without anyone else for company. I lacked a support network, which made me feel both afraid and bewildered, as if I were wandering aimlessly.’
Later on, he was transferred to a facility situated in Pittsburgh, which allowed his father, Jon, the opportunity to pay him a visit.
In addition, Jon stated during the Vice TV series that he pursued sole custody of his son following his assertion that a doctor had informed him that Collin lacked a specific diagnosis.
He shared that he visited the courthouse, invested over a million dollars to secure his child’s release, and in doing so, exhausted all of his assets.
Collin isn’t just distant from his mother, Kate, but also a few of his other siblings. Yet, in an interview with ET on Tuesday, he expressed, “My affection for my siblings runs incredibly deep. I would never intentionally harm them.”
I have always valued respect and dignity in my interactions with others, especially when it comes to public discourse. My personal experiences have taught me the importance of maintaining a high level of integrity and honesty. Therefore, I would never publicly disparage or slander someone’s name in the media.
He mentioned, “She influences their perception of me. I believe if we were acquainted now, we would make great friends.”
Last year on Vice TV, it was shown that Collin had been living apart from his family, which includes his sister Hannah and their shared father Jon, within the same household.
She explained that he wouldn’t join us for outdoor play or dinners, as he’d have separate meal times and activities.
Colin shared that he wasn’t aware of who his mother was prior to television, but he believes she was someone different. “I believe she is essentially a kind-hearted person with good intentions,” he continued, “but I suspect that the influence of television, wealth, and fame can transform individuals.”
Nevertheless, during an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2022, he disclosed that his mother’s decision to send him to a behavioral institution significantly impacted their bond.
He mentioned, “I never had a close bond with her even prior to being there. Being around her only seemed to further erode whatever connection we had.”
Last year, after her son made certain assertions, Kate issued a statement clarifying that her son had received various mental health diagnoses throughout the years.
Initially, she expressed that due to circumstances necessitating protection for herself, his siblings, and him, she had no alternative but to speak up. She explained this decision was made after numerous attempts at outpatient care over the years failed to meet his requirements, ultimately leading to his admission into a specialized facility for his own welfare.
‘The decision to admit him was made by emergency room doctors following one of his many attacks/outbursts – this one involving his use of a weapon.’
Presently, after Jon discontinued Collin’s treatment, I regretfully report that my son’s erratic and aggressive actions have persisted frequently, directed at Jon, Hannah, and others in his vicinity.
She mentioned that one of Colin’s ongoing challenges has been his skewed understanding of reality.
Kate also wrote that he ‘remains a very troubled young man’ and still ‘needs a lot of help.’
We’ve generally stayed away from his life because he has a pattern of erratic actions and aggressive inclinations that have affected us negatively.
Collin’s sibling, Mady (known as Madelyn), similarly took to her Instagram stories and leveled accusations against her brother, claiming instances of ‘physical abuse’ and ‘hate speech.’
2016 saw Collin being admitted to a behavioral institution, following which Kate expressed to People that this step was taken to assist him in mastering the abilities required to become the best version of himself possible.
His needs can be somewhat flexible to define, but it’s essential for him to acquire specific techniques to manage situations more effectively.
She mentioned, “This problem we’ve faced for an extended period is one I’ve handled individually.”
“I’ve been feeling quite isolated through this experience. Similarly, it’s important to note that the effects aren’t limited to just me or him; our whole family has been affected.”
In 2019, Jon asserted that his former spouse confined Collin at the institution, adding that she had only paid three visits to their son during an interview with DailyMailTV.
