Jon Gosselin steps out with daughter Hannah in NYC – after son Collin claimed his mother Kate ‘zip-tied his arms and legs and locked him in basement as a child’

As I read through this heart-wrenching tale of Collin and his mother Kate Gosselin, I find myself deeply moved by their experiences. It’s clear that both have been through a lot, with their lives taking an unexpected turn due to mental health struggles within the family.

Jon Gosselin enjoyed a day in New York City with his daughter Hannah Gosselin.

On Monday, the pair was seen in New York City alongside Hannah’s latest partner, Lennon, and Adriane Schwartz, who represents Gosselin.

Jon put on a tan jacket zipped up, which he wore over a complete black ensemble, accessorized with a backward hat and pale blue sneakers.

I chose a vibrant hot pink sweater that complemented my flowing, wavy tresses. A radiant smile graced my face as I strolled hand-in-hand with my new companion.

Jon, who is 47 years old, and Hannah, aged 20, subsequently made an appearance on The Tamron Hall Show, during which they shared details about their joint 75-pound weight reduction journey.

Previously, the pair gained prominence as the main characters in ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8’, a reality TV show that ran for five consecutive seasons on TLC, from 2007 to 2010.

As a devoted fan, I found myself captivated by the series that trailed me, Jon, my then-spouse Kate Gosselin, and our eight offspring: Hannah, Collin, Aaden, Alexis, Joel, Leah, Madelyn, and Cara.

After the bitter, decade-long divorce in 2009, Gosselin and Kate now solely exchange information through their legal representatives.

In 2016, the ex-server at TGI Fridays was given sole custody of Hannah, and this was followed by him being granted custody of their son, Collin, in 2018.

Jon continues to be separated or distant from his children Aaden, Alexis, Joel, Leah who are all 20 years old in North Carolina, as well as his 23-year-old daughters Madelyn and Cara who reside in New York.

Jon went on an outing recently, following a series of events where his son Collin made serious accusations against Jon’s estranged mother, Kate, during his time on the reality show ‘Jon & Kate Plus 8,’ which was popular in the year 2000.

At the age of 20, Collin claims that his mother, with whom he is estranged, had restrained him as a child using zip ties for both his arms and legs and kept him confined in a basement. This allegedly occurred during a period when she subjected him to a campaign of alleged physical and emotional abuse.

In an interview with The Sun, he mentioned that starting around the ages of eight or nine, he was set apart from his other seven siblings by Kate, and further explained that he didn’t have a typical childhood experience.

Colin asserts that he was confined in a “custom-made basement chamber” on multiple occasions, where he slept and was under surveillance by numerous cameras, monitoring him either for an entire day or part thereof.

Previously, he explained that he was sent to a psychiatric institution when he was just 12 years old, and accused his mother, Kate, of doing this to keep him from talking about the mistreatment he experienced at home.

He mentioned that they constructed a room equipped with cameras inside it, featuring a small window in one corner, and the door was securely locked from the outside.

On numerous occasions, my mother confined me to a specific room, securing my wrists and ankles with zip ties and locking the door with a bolting mechanism. She would then extinguish the lights and install cameras to monitor me silently.

For much of the day, I found myself confined to a single room, distanced from my brothers and sisters. I rarely ventured outdoors, and our interactions were virtually non-existent. In essence, I was under a form of solitary confinement.

He asserted that Kate frequently displayed physically aggressive behavior and used harsh, extremely abusive language. Furthermore, he often bore the brunt of her emotional outbursts.

During Jon and Kate’s custody dispute, it was disclosed that their son Collin had confided in his counselor about the alleged mistreatment by his mother.

He revealed a letter written in crayon to dad Jon, begging his dad to ‘save him’ and let him live with him.

Alongside his disclosure, Collin additionally provided his personal medical documents as evidence that he does not suffer from any mental health issues or behavioral disorders.

As a devoted guardian, I, Jon, have shared that I wasn’t aware of the alleged mistreatment by Kate towards our children Hannah and Collin until much later. I want to clarify that such incidents occurred only after my departure from our previous shared life.

He said Hannah had told him about the alleged abuse once he got custody of her.

One sibling has supported Collin’s claims. 

Colin asserts that he was taken out of school in the fourth grade, following the instance when he disclosed the suspected mistreatment to his teachers. This happened after he attended class with a visibly bruised and inflamed ear.

He too asserted that he had informed the camera team working on their program, yet Kate managed to skillfully conceal those aspects quite effectively.

Jon disclosed correspondence received from the Pennsylvania Office of Children, Youth, and Families within the Department of Human Services, which reported allegations of abuse against Collin. However, these claims were declared as unsubstantiated.

Jon claims there was ‘nine separate instances’ where abuse against Collin was reported. 

If it’s true that Kate did what Colin is alleging, she would’ve faced an investigation by the authorities and legal proceedings.

According to Collins, he could not have private conversations with the children’s services personnel, as she would listen from outside the room.

According to the Department of Human Services’ Office of Children, Youth, and Families in Philadelphia, their primary focus is ensuring child safety. Any suspected instances of abuse or neglect are swiftly investigated and addressed with immediacy.

I’ve been self-taught since the fourth grade, and my medical history, as revealed by records obtained by a publication, shows a multifaceted mental health profile. I was diagnosed with various conditions, including an unspecified form of bipolar disorder, autism spectrum disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). In 2016, these challenges led me to seek care in a mental health facility.

Colin asserts that his previous diagnosis was incorrect, using his medical records from a psychiatric assessment conducted last year as evidence. These records indicate that he does not have any of the specified mental health conditions and exhibits no concerns typically associated with adulthood.

According to Collins, various drugs made him feel as if he were a mindless creature, and he was kept at the facility for 22 months by Kate primarily out of self-preservation. Furthermore, Collins mentioned that his mother had often warned him that no one would believe him in such situations.

In January 2018, he was placed under Jon’s care, and he found it challenging to adapt back to society, particularly with children of similar age.

He completed high school with plans to enlist in the Marines, however, he was released from service in August of the previous year – a situation that is said to have arisen because he was sent to a behavioral facility following an action attributed to Kate.

He now plans to attend college at Penn State.

According to Kate’s attorney, Richard Puleo, he felt that Kate hadn’t acted with the intention of hurting Collin. Instead, he stated that Kate took actions to safeguard herself and her family, as they were reportedly dealing with troubling behavior from Collin.

If the accusations against Kate are true, she would have faced an investigation and legal proceedings by the relevant authorities.

In July 2023, Kate publicly criticized Collin, labeling him as “aggressive and erratic” and asserting that he had falsified accusations of mistreatment she supposedly experienced.

In response to her teenage son’s revelations about their past in the VICE TV docuseries, Dark Side of the 2000s, she made a shocking statement that accused him of lies. He had alleged in the series that she had mistreated him as a child and isolated him from his seven siblings after her divorce from his father Jon.

Kate broke her silence on her child’s shocking claims just one day after her Mady shared a lengthy statement on her Instagram Stories and accused Collin of ‘physical violence and hate speech.’

Kate echoed Mady’s assertions, explaining that Collin was admitted to Fairmont Behavioral Health Institute in Philadelphia as far back as 2016 due to his being diagnosed with several psychiatric conditions.

In her thorough explanation, Kate expressed that she’s reluctantly found herself in a situation where she feels she has no other option but to act. Despite her regret, she feels compelled to voice her concerns at this time.

Over the years, my beloved son Collin has been given several psychiatric diagnoses. To ensure the security of me, his siblings, and himself, as well as his overall health, he was admitted to a specialized care center after long-term outpatient therapy didn’t meet his requirements adequately.

In response to yet another incident, the emergency room physicians opted to admit him, as this particular episode involved him brandishing a weapon.

In the here and now, after Jon decided to discontinue Collin’s treatment, I must confess that my son’s erratic and aggressive actions have persisted all too frequently, not just towards Jon and Hannah, but also those close to them.

‘Collin’s skewed understanding of reality is one challenge he’s frequently faced. For those with relatives dealing with mental health matters, instances like these – where falsehoods arise – are regrettably not uncommon. It’s yet another painful aspect of this ongoing battle.’

The former reality TV star went on to say that ‘all parent-child relationships are complex,’ and described the situation as ‘incredibly complicated and painful.’  

She explained that all actions taken within our household were explicitly advised by his pediatric psychiatrist and their specialist team. These precautions were implemented for the protection of everyone in our family, including friends and even our beloved pets.

It’s unfortunate that Colin seems to still be grappling with significant personal issues, requiring considerable support. Regrettably, his volatile past actions and aggressive inclinations towards us have kept us from having a more active role in his life.

‘What Madly shared on social media lately is truthful, and I admire her courage in making that post. That covers everything I want to say about the topic right now, so I won’t be discussing it further at the moment.’ (Kate concluded)

When talking about being dismissed from the Marines this year, Collin shared with ET: ‘I was nearly finished with my training, just shy of graduation. Upon investigation, they discovered that I had spent time in an institution during a period in my past.’

Speaking with pure excitement, I exclaimed, “Just being in this amazing institution is sufficient for them to let me go! It’s all about the institution itself, nothing more!

Instead, he disclosed to the media source that his goal right now is ‘to challenge the verdict’, elaborating that becoming a U.S. Marine is nearly his only ambition left unfulfilled in life.

Speaking about his ongoing work on an appeal, Gosselin shared his intentions to delve into finance studies, a pursuit he intends to undertake while enrolling at Pennsylvania State University later this autumn.

In July of last year, a representative for Jon Gosselin stated that his son Collin and daughter Hannah, whom Jon was granted sole custody of in 2018, had passed a Marine Corps background check, according to Us Weekly.

Prior to joining, the representative clarified that Colin must undergo a thorough Marine background screening, which involves checks on his mental, physical, and medical history. The official findings of this assessment accurately represent the facts.

On Vice TV’s “The Hidden Truths of the 2000s,” he discussed being placed in an institution at the age of twelve, and claimed that his mother, Kate, sent him away to keep him from speaking about the mistreatment he experienced at home.

Jon and Kate were married from 1999 until their separation by divorce in 2009. They have a total of eight children together: the twins Cara and Madelyn, born in 2000, as well as sextuplets Collin, Hannah, Joel, Aaden, Alexis, and Leah.

At one point, Colin mentioned to his teachers that his mother had been subjecting him to a harmful treatment, and this was essentially why she placed him elsewhere. He began sharing details of what was happening at home with others as well.

It seems to me that she may have sought an outlet for her anger and stress, and unfortunately, I happened to be that outlet. Since I was nearby, it appears that I became her target.

Regarding my experience at the institution, Collin reminisced, “Spending time there had a profound negative impact on me mentally; it felt like a deeply troubling and very dark environment.

‘I was alone, with only myself for company. There was nobody else to lean on, so I felt scared, bewildered, and unsure of my path.’

Later on, he was transferred to a facility situated in Pittsburgh, which allowed his father, Jon, the opportunity to pay him a visit.

In the Vice TV series, Jon added that he pursued full custody of his son following his assertion that a medical professional had informed him there was no specific diagnosis for Collin.

As a devoted parent, I found myself standing before the court. Every single cent I possessed, I invested in securing my son’s release. That’s how much it mattered to me.

Apart from being distant from his mother, Kate, Collin also has strained relationships with some of his other siblings. Yet, during a conversation with ET on Tuesday, he expressed his deep affection for his siblings, stating, “I hold my siblings in the highest regard and would never intentionally cause them harm.

“I won’t slander them in the media, but I think my mother may be the source of the information being shared about them.

He stated, “Her viewpoint about me is influenced by her. If we were acquainted today, I believe we would make great friends.

Last year on Vice TV, it was shown that Collin had been living apart from his family (including his sister Hannah and their father Jon) within the same household.

She mentioned that he wouldn’t join us for outdoor play or meals, as he’d have separate dining and playtime schedules.

Collin shared that he didn’t recognize his mother before television became popular, suggesting she may have been a completely different person then. However, he believes she is fundamentally kind-hearted with good intentions. He thinks the influence of television, wealth, and fame can alter people significantly.

Yet, during an interview with Entertainment Tonight in 2022, he disclosed that his mother’s decision to send him to a behavioral institution had a significant impact on their bond.

He stated, “I didn’t form a bond with her after my visit, and to be honest, I believe our connection was not significant prior to that. It seems like the lack of it only made things worse.

Last year, I, being an ardent admirer, shared my own insights based on my beloved figure’s disclosure, where she mentioned that her son has been diagnosed with several mental health conditions throughout his journey.

She initially wrote that, due to necessity, she had to speak up. ‘His situation required immediate action for the protection of me, his siblings, and him. After numerous attempts at outpatient care that didn’t meet his requirements, he was admitted into a specialized institution.’

After one of his numerous aggressive incidents, which included the use of a weapon, the emergency room physicians decided it would be best to admit him.

In the current timeframe, after Jon decided to stop treating Collin, my child’s erratic and aggressive actions, regrettably, have persisted frequently, targeting Jon, Hannah, and other individuals in his vicinity.

In my professional opinion as a lifestyle expert, I’ve noticed that Collin often grapples with a skewed understanding of reality. This is just one of several challenges he’s had to face throughout his journey.

Kate also wrote that he ‘remains a very troubled young man’ and still ‘needs a lot of help.’ 

We’ve generally kept our distance from him because of his erratic past actions and aggressive outbursts that were often directed at us.

Collins’ sibling, Mady (also known as Madelyn), swiftly took to her Instagram stories and leveled accusations against him for his actions involving “physical abuse” and “hateful rhetoric.

In 2016, soon after Collin was admitted to the behavioral institution, Kate explained to People that it was to assist him in acquiring the skills necessary for him to become the best version of himself possible.

As an ardent admirer, I find myself constantly pondering about his requirements, which can sometimes be elusive. Yet, it’s crucial for him to grasp specific techniques that would aid him in navigating through various situations effectively.

She stated, ‘We’ve faced this challenge for quite some duration, and I’ve managed it independently for most of that time.’

I’ve been feeling quite isolated in this situation. Similarly, it’s important to note that this issue hasn’t just affected me or him, but has touched all of us as a family.

In 2019, Jon asserted that his former spouse confined Collin at the institution, and he stated during an interview with DailyMailTV that she had only visited their son on three occasions.
