Jon Favreau Teases He Might Be Done with ‘Star Wars’ After ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’

Is The Mandalorian and Grogu Jon Favreau’s last project with Star Wars? Disney and Lucasfilm have decided against a fourth season of The Mandalorian and are instead developing a movie to continue the story. Directed by Favreau, this film will be the first Star Wars movie released in theaters since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.

In a recent interview with Polygon, Jon Favreau hinted that the upcoming movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu could mark the end of his involvement with Star Wars. He explained that after seven years working on the franchise, transitioning to a film feels like the natural conclusion of his current work. The word ‘culmination’ suggests a sense of finality, and he seems pleased with the idea of ending his run on a high note. Favreau also discussed the difficulties of adapting The Mandalorian from a TV series to a large-scale film, indicating that this movie will be the most ambitious story yet for the pair.

When it comes to Star Wars, we need to deliver a truly impressive visual experience. We already showed what we could do on smaller screens, so now we have to raise the bar for the big screen. That means using wider aspect ratios for IMAX, creating immersive sets, and making the special effects absolutely top-notch. The story itself needs to be equally captivating – something so compelling that people will choose to go to a theater, fully immerse themselves, and forget about everything else. It needs to be an experience that’s so good, they’ll want to see it again and again, and encourage others to do the same.

Jon Favreau’s Long History with ‘Star Wars’

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

The first episode of The Mandalorian arrived on Disney+ on November 11, 2019, but the story of Din Djarin and Grogu had been in development for over seven years. Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni first pitched the idea to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy back in 2017. Before the series premiered, Favreau appeared in Solo: A Star Wars Story in 2018, voicing the character Rio Durant. Favreau not only created The Mandalorian but also wrote 20 out of its 24 episodes and directed the first episode of season two. He also wrote all seven episodes of The Book of Boba Fett and served as an executive producer on Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. His involvement with Star Wars actually goes back to 2010, when he voiced the character Pre Vizla, a leader in the Mandalorian Death Watch.

After working on Star Wars for many years, it’s natural that Jon Favreau might want to reduce his involvement. Even if he stops writing and directing future Star Wars projects, he’ll probably continue as a producer, especially while the stories begun with The Mandalorian are still being told. He might even continue acting in the franchise, similar to how he played Happy Hogan in multiple Marvel movies after stepping down as director of Iron Man 3. Regardless, Favreau will remain with Disney, directing a new short series for Disney+ featuring Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, one of Walt Disney’s earliest creations.

While the current season of The Mandalorian and Grogu might be Jon Favreau’s last direct involvement with Star Wars, it doesn’t mean the story he started – often called “The Mandoverse” by fans – is over. Ahsoka Season 2 is coming to Disney+ later this year, and Dave Filoni, now a leader at Lucasfilm, is still planning a movie that will bring together characters and storylines from The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Ahsoka.
