Jon Favreau is excited to finally bring Grogu to the big screen

As a gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in the galaxy far, far away, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming cinematic adventure, “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” Having grown up watching the original trilogy and later binge-watching “The Mandalorian” on Disney+, I feel like a kid in a candy store, eagerly awaiting the next chapter in this epic saga.

As a dedicated Star Wars enthusiast, my journey began with the epic saga unfolding on the big screen through iconic films like “A New Hope” and “The Force Awakens.” The narrative continued to grow with standalone stories such as “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.” Currently, fans have access to 11 live-action films on Disney+. However, there’s an electric buzz in the air regarding the next live-action Star Wars cinematic adventure – “The Mandalorian and Grogu.

In a Twitter post from Scott Sanders from The Disney Cruise Line Blog that featured an interview clip with Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, Favreau talks about what fans can expect with The Mandalorian and Grogu. The follow-up to the Disney+ debut series The Mandalorian, of which there are three seasons, will be the first big-screen appearance for every kid’s favorite ‘Baby Yoda’ aptly named Grogu, the cub to Din Djarin’s wolf who recently helped to reclaim Mandalore in the series.

Director Jon Favreau expresses his excitement for crafting a fresh narrative on the big screen featuring characters from “The Mandalorian,” stating that their aim is to provide content that appreciates viewers who have followed the series and Star Wars since its inception. He looks forward to portraying the grandeur of a movie while also introducing these central characters to new spectators. Given Grogu’s prominent role in the film’s title, Favreau hints at the significance of Grogu’s character and promises that audiences will learn more about him.

As a die-hard Star Wars fan, let me share an exciting piece of news! Just like how Rogue One, the tale of the Rebels who obtained the Death Star plans (seen in Princess Leia’s hands in A New Hope), paved the way for its own acclaimed spin-off series, Andor, The Mandalorian is all set to become the first Disney+ series that will transition into a movie.

One reason why “The Mandalorian” became so widely acclaimed as Disney+’s leading series is that Jon Favreau skillfully recreated the visual and thematic atmosphere of the original trilogy. The extended narrative format enabled engaging side quests and weekly creature encounters, fitting with Dave Filoni’s storytelling approach, who has worked on shows like “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels.” Pedro Pascal plays Din Djarin, the character under the armor, and fans are excited to see his performance in upcoming Star Wars movies.

The Mandalorian and Grogu is expected to release in theaters everywhere on May 22, 2026.
