Ever since Lucasfilm announced the movie The Mandalorian and Grogu, fans have wondered what will happen with Season 4 of The Mandalorian. Many believe the movie is actually using scripts that were originally written for the next season of the Disney+ show.
Jon Favreau, the creator of the series, is now clarifying things in a recent interview with Empire Magazine.

Jon Favreau revealed to Empire that he had already written a full fourth season of The Mandalorian, working alongside Dave Filoni on the plans.
He clarified that he had finished writing full scripts, not just initial outlines, and mentioned he still had the completed scripts for Season 4 with him.

Favreau made it clear that The Mandalorian and Grogu was originally planned as a movie, and wasn’t simply leftover content from what would have been The Mandalorian Season 4.
As a big fan, what I found really interesting in what Jon Favreau said is that this new movie isn’t going to feel like a stretched-out TV episode. He explained they’re building it like a proper movie – with a clear beginning, middle, and end – rather than something designed for weekly releases. He thinks this approach will give it a bigger scope and feel more epic than the original series.

Although Jon Favreau has stated that The Mandalorian Season 4 probably won’t happen as originally planned, the show’s characters and storylines won’t be dropped.
According to Empire magazine, the new film will connect with the storyline of the second season of Ahsoka, which is currently the only other live-action Star Wars series being made. However, the magazine also clarified that you won’t need to watch Ahsoka to understand the movie, making it accessible to viewers who aren’t familiar with the series.
The exact connection between these different storylines is still a secret, but the larger political struggle hinted at in The Mandalorian is starting to become clearer.

According to a recent report from Deadline, Jonny Coyne will return as a member of the Shadow Council – a secret group of former Imperial officers loyal to Grand Moff Gideon. This group is focused on restoring the Imperial military, and the report specifically mentioned Grand Admiral Thrawn, who is the main villain in the Ahsoka series.

The initial trailer for The Mandalorian and Grogu highlighted Din Djarin and Grogu’s individual journeys, showcasing the action, Western themes, and humor fans expect from the show. Lucasfilm also revealed that the film will feature Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt’s son, played by Jeremy Allen White, indicating the story won’t focus only on the return of the Empire.
Both The Mandalorian and Grogu will be in theaters on May 22, 2026, and the second season of Ahsoka is planned for release next year. It’s currently unknown if these stories will finish the Shadow Council plotline or lead into a new period in the Star Wars timeline between the Empire’s downfall and the First Order’s emergence.

Currently, Jon Favreau’s statements confirm that the new movie isn’t simply a continuation of The Mandalorian disguised with a different title.
