One of Jon Bernthal‘s most overlooked recent films is quickly dominating streaming charts.
Though he first gained recognition playing Shane on The Walking Dead, Jon Bernthal’s career has really taken off in the last ten years. He’s especially known for his highly praised role as Frank Castle, The Punisher, starting with the Netflix series Daredevil. Since then, he’s appeared in a variety of successful films, including Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver and the Academy Award-winning King Richard.
Jon Bernthal has recently returned to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a strong showing in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again and a Disney+ special, Punisher: One Last Kill, which he co-wrote with director Reinaldo Marcus Green. He’s also received a lot of praise for his work on FX on Hulu’s The Bear, including two Emmy nominations and one win. More recently, he co-starred in Netflix’s record-breaking series His & Hers and played the role of Spartan king Menelaus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
With his return to film projects on the horizon, Jon Bernthal is currently starring in the new streaming hit, The Amateur. Directed by James Hawes, known for his work on Slow Horses, this intense spy thriller is the second adaptation of Robert Littell’s novel. The story follows Rami Malek as Charlie Heller, a CIA codebreaker who receives special training to find the people responsible for his wife’s death in a terrorist attack.
I recently watched The Amateur, and Jon Bernthal was fantastic as Jackson O’Brien, callsign ‘The Bear’ – a CIA operative who gets close to the main character, Charlie, and tries to talk him out of seeking revenge. The movie’s packed with great actors, too – you’ve got Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson all in it, which really elevates the whole thing.
More than a year after its release in cinemas, the film The Amateur is now gaining popularity on Prime Video. As of today, the revenge thriller is rapidly climbing the platform’s overall Top 10 chart, currently at number 6, and the Top 10 movie chart, where it’s at number 4. It initially appeared on Prime’s Top 10 lists last week, but has been steadily rising in the rankings ever since.
The movie The Amateur is finding success on Prime Video, but this isn’t the first time it’s topped streaming charts. After its release in theaters in April 2025, it quickly became the most popular title on both Hulu and Disney+ when it became available on those platforms that summer, and stayed in the Top 10 for two months.
After a slow start, the movie The Amateur is now gaining popularity as a hit on Prime Video. While critics were divided – giving it a 61% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – it still earned $96 million at the box office from a $60 million budget. With actor Bernthal currently popular and spy thrillers like Slow Horses, The Agency, and The Night Agent remaining fan favorites, The Amateur is expected to continue climbing in viewership on the streaming platform.
