Joke’s on ‘The Bear’ — ‘Hacks’ gets a surprise Emmy win for best comedy series
As a longtime TV enthusiast who’s seen my fair share of award shows and their subsequent drama, I must say that this year’s Emmys have been nothing short of extraordinary! The sheer dominance of “Form all” is simply astounding – if it were a sports team, they would be breaking records left and right.
On Sunday evening at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosts Dan and Eugene Levy swiftly tackled the topic that had been weighing heavily on everyone’s thoughts.
During the opening monologue, Eugene Levy shared that he understands some might anticipate a joke about whether “The Bear” is actually a comedy, but in keeping with the genuine essence of ‘The Bear,’ he assured us there won’t be any jokes made.
Incredibly enough, it seems that the Emmy voters shared the sentiment that “The Bear,” though excellent, is not a comedy. Instead, they awarded the final prize for Comedy Series to “Hacks,” a show that indeed incorporates humor and jokes, a characteristic that “The Bear” does not exhibit as predominantly. While “The Bear” delivers an intense emotional experience, “Hacks” offers a more balanced blend of drama and humor.
In keeping with the characteristically pleasant nature of the Canadian-originated production, the show was quite delightful overall, predictable for the most part (until an unexpected twist in the ending), yet it had its fair share of intriguing instances. Here’s a brief rundown.
In an unusual Emmy situation, “The Bear” premiered its new seasons in June, with awards for its previous season (released 15 months ago) being recognized tonight. However, Television Academy members were voting while watching the latest season and were deeply moved by Liza Colón-Zayas’ emotional performance in the flashback episode “Napkins.” This episode showcased how Tina landed her job at the Beef sandwich shop. While Colón-Zayas had a powerful moment in Season 2, her heartbreaking turn in “Napkins” and the subsequent bonus episode may have positively influenced voters’ decisions.
The issue for “The Bear” was potentially that the exceptional episode “Napkins,” which was from the third season, may have been the only standout in a series of episodes that viewers were evaluating during voting time. Since the first half of a two-part storyline (filmed together with the fourth season), the more recent episodes seemed to lack direction at times, giving the impression that the show was merely treading water. This predictably led to criticism saying that “The Bear” wasn’t as impressive as it had been previously, with comments suggesting inconsistency and a scarcity of plot. Adding to this, some genuine perplexity and animosity regarding why “The Bear” was even nominated in the comedy category contributed to its loss against “Hacks.” This upset was not entirely unexpected.
Jean Smart has continued her winning streak at the Emmys
Jodie Foster expressed an overwhelming feeling of love after winning her first Emmy at a special night for women over a certain age. In her acceptance speech for playing the sheriff in “True Detective: Night Country,” she thanked the indigenous people of Alaska for sharing their stories and allowing others to listen, describing it as a deeply moving experience that transcends time. She concluded by stating that love and dedication are the keys to creating art.
Predictably Phenomenal: The Expected Emmy Triumph
Most touching interruption
John Oliver, following his latest Emmy win for “Last Week Tonight,” took a heartfelt moment to honor his late dog, Hoagie. However, the emotional tribute was abruptly ended by the cloying, orchestral music typically played at award shows. In response, he expressed himself in the most John Oliver way possible. (He’s quite skilled at passionate outbursts, and his talent has earned him a few Emmys, I believe.)
Speech most exemplifying the tone of the winner’s show (and why “The Bear” is probably not a comedy)
Jeremy Allen White, after winning the lead comedy actor Emmy for playing stressed-out chef Carmy on “The Bear” came onstage, seemingly in full-blown panic attack mode. “My heart is just beating right out of its chest,” he said. White collected himself and gave a heartfelt speech — and then walked offstage in the wrong direction.
In his heartfelt address after winning the Limited Series Supporting Actor Emmy for “Fargo”, Lamorne Morris said: “Dear Lily, my precious girl, who turned four this past weekend, I’ve done it! I promised you and now I have. I know you’ve always had your doubts about me.
Trust in Gadd is well-placed, as “Baby Reindeer” gained unexpected popularity during the Emmy race which started in the spring. Richard Gadd, the creator, star, and man in a kilt, delivered three speeches following his Emmy victories in writing, acting, and limited series categories. The last speech brought some applause from the audience.
In simpler terms, Gadd stated, “Although the industry is facing tough times and may lead to networks cutting costs and expanding their programming options, I firmly believe that no downturn can be overcome without a readiness to take chances. The success of ‘Baby Reindeer’ demonstrates this point – it shows that there isn’t a fixed recipe for success; you don’t need well-known actors, established intellectual properties, long-running series, or universally appealing stories to create a hit.
In its six-season run, ‘Better Call Saul’ received a whopping 53 Emmy nominations but failed to secure any wins. On the other hand, ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, which bid us farewell this year, only managed to win twice (in directing and picture editing) out of its 55 nominations. Despite being nominated, it’s not exactly a walk in the park to win an Emmy, right?
It’s highly probable that Gary Oldman will win an Emmy next year for his role in “Slow Horses” due to the significant impact he made this year with his portrayal of Jackson Lamb. The character is foul-mouthed, flatulent, booze-soaked, and greasy, but it seems that Oldman’s performance has resonated strongly with Emmy voters. I wouldn’t be surprised if he takes home the award next time around.
