Joker: Folie à Deux isn't really a musical: "It's very different"

As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for the unconventional and a soft spot for risk-takers, I am eagerly anticipating the release of “Joker: Folie à Deux”. The first film was a masterpiece that pushed boundaries, and I’m intrigued by Todd Phillips’ audacity to take it a step further with a musical sequel.

In 2019, Todd Phillips’ film “Joker” became the initial R-rated movie to gross more than a billion dollars at the box office, a feat that was later matched by “Deadpool” and “Wolverine” this year. A sequel titled “Joker: Folie à Deux” is set for release next month. How will Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck in the original film, outdo this? By simply incorporating music

In the upcoming film, Lady Gaga has joined the cast as Harley Quinn, the Joker’s significant other. Since she is predominantly recognized for her musical talents, it’s worth mentioning that the movie will include singing from Gaga. During an interview at the Venice Film Festival, she shared why she was drawn to this role. “Joaquin Phoenix’s performance set a very high standard. I believe that when stories are told about individuals who are often misunderstood by society, the actors and director can reveal something new and unexpected. With the film Joker, I felt as though I gained an understanding and insight I had never experienced before.”

In terms of the film’s musical aspect, Lady Gaga stated that in her view, the movie doesn’t fully meet the criteria of a traditional musical. This could be reassuring for fans who are apprehensive about singing and dancing. “It’s quite distinct,” she remarked. “The music serves as a means for the characters to express themselves because the dialogue alone wasn’t sufficient.”

In the movie, both Phoenix and Gaga lend their voices; a snippet of their performance can be glimpsed towards the end of the trailer, where they perform parts of the song “Get Happy.” It’s noticeable that Gaga sings below her full potential to create a more authentic feel. Moreover, they performed live on set. Initially, Stefani Germanotta (Gaga’s real name) mentioned they would be singing live, but Joaquin Phoenix argued otherwise. However, they did end up singing live, and surprisingly, every part of the recording was done live. Each take presented a unique version of the song, which made the process quite thrilling

Why does the Joker sequel add singing and dancing?

Translating the given text into an easier and more natural language: Making a musical sequel to a highly successful movie such as Joker is quite daring, considering that the original was also bold in its approach. Fingers crossed that Folie à Deux will be another instance of taking big risks leading to great rewards. As Todd Phillips stated to reporters, “I must admit I’m feeling more anxious this time around because there are higher expectations for a second film and more nervousness.”

If you remember the first film Arthur has a musicality to him. He is often dancing to express the way he feels. And Hildur Guðnadóttir’s score is almost a character in the first film. So when it started taking shape with actual music elements we thought what if we got Lady Gaga who actually brings music with her.

I’m curious about how the movie will be received when it releases on October 4, but I won’t be getting a Joker 3 anytime soon, as it seems like Phillips doesn’t plan to make one. When asked if you should see the movie, Phillips jokingly suggested that whatever unfolds in Folie à Deux is conclusive for the characters

No, I think for me, the story of Arthur/Joker has been told with this film. As far as continuing in this space, as a filmmaker, probably not. But everything I do is dictated by actors. What actor could I work with, who am I dying to work with? Clearly these films have been built around Joaquin and then we introduced Gaga. So I can’t say yes or no but I can’t really say it’s my goal to stay in this space.

Is it likely that “Joker: Folie à Deux” will be the third R-rated film to gross over a billion dollars globally? I believe so. It’s refreshing to see that Phillips doesn’t seem to have plans for making this into a franchise, which is quite common in the superhero movie genre
