Joker: Folie à Deux ending explained: So, who is the Joker?

As a seasoned gamer and cinephile with over two decades of immersion in the world of comic books, I must say that Joker: Folie à Deux has left me utterly spellbound. It’s not often that a sequel manages to surpass its predecessor while simultaneously redefining the very essence of its iconic characters.

Joker 2 ending spoilers follow.

In a departure from what some fans may anticipate, “Joker: Folie à Deux” doesn’t continue the story in a traditional sense. Instead, its unconventional conclusion offers the most astonishing twist yet.

The plot unfolds post the 2019 film Joker‘s finale, focusing on Arthur Fleck (portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix) who is now in custody, charged for the homicide of five individuals, among them TV host Murray Franklin (Robert de Niro).

Maryanne Stewart, his attorney, plans to build their defense strategy around the theory that he suffers from a dissociative identity disorder. The argument is that during the murders, it was not him but another personality, the Joker, who took control of his body. This approach could potentially prevent the imposition of a death sentence, as District Attorney Harvey Dent has requested it.

For now, Arthur is held under the influence of drugs and closely watched at Arkham State Hospital in Gotham. His time there has made him a mere ghost. Yet, upon encountering fellow patient Harleen ‘Lee’ Quinzel (Lady Gaga), his world regains a touch of magic once more. The boundary between Arthur and the Joker starts to blur.

The climax culminates in a surprising turn of events that could have you questioning Arthur’s destiny and the true identity of the Joker. So, let’s explore the conclusion of “Joker 2“.

Joker 2 ending explained

Throughout much of its duration, the film “Joker: Folie à Deux” intertwines Arthur’s tumultuous life in prison, his legal proceedings, and his burgeoning connection with Lee.

Struggling with the consequences of his actions, which had left many lives in shambles, including Sophie (played by Zazie Beetz), a former neighbor, and Gary (Leigh Gill), a colleague, Arthur comes to the realization that he no longer wishes to be the Joker. He stands before the jury, admitting to the crimes, and discloses his desire to destroy everything, stating that he merely sought to cause an explosion.

Lee’s disappointment is evident, and later she won’t return his calls.

At the courthouse, Arthur awaits his verdict following a swift jury decision. But prior to the announcement’s conclusion, there’s an explosion within the structure.

With the court in utter chaos, Arthur sees his opportunity to escape.

Just before he departs, you’ll notice Harvey Dent is seated on the ground, suffering from a grisly injury on one side of his face – a premonition of his sinister persona, Two-Face.

Out on the sidewalk, Arthur encounters a fellow Joker enthusiast in disguise who assists him and leads him to an exit vehicle. It turns out that these two Joker admirers orchestrated the explosion, employing it as a means to facilitate his escape.

In concealment at the back, Arthur overhears them predicting that a terrorist attack is merely the start, a prospect he detests. Desiring no part in it, he leaps out of the vehicle and sprints through Gotham’s tumultuous streets, skillfully eluding both his enthusiasts and law enforcement.

Making his way back to his childhood neighborhood, Arthur finds himself standing before the famous staircase featured in the initial film, with Lee already there, anticipating his arrival.

He isn’t pleased with his confession and abandonment of his Joker character, and that’s what Lee communicates to him. In simpler terms, she expresses her disappointment about the end of their shared illusion, stating, “What we had was just a fantasy, and you let it go.

Arthur makes an effort to discuss things rationally, but instead, she breaks into the song ‘That’s Entertainment’. Persisting in her dreamlike state, she departs from him. As it happens, the police arrive to take him away for incarceration once more.

In due course, Arthur returns to Arkham, and it appears that many of the Joker’s followers share Lee’s disillusionment. A character we’ve glimpsed throughout the film steps into the limelight when he encounters Arthur in a corridor.

Without the guards present, he repeatedly stabs him. A short while after, Arthur succumbs to his wounds, prompting the prisoner to erupt into a crazed fit of laughter.

At the rear of the frame, there’s a youth wielding a knife, creating incisions on either side of his mouth – essentially carving a grin reminiscent of the DC-recognized Joker character.

It seems possible that Arthur may have sown the first seeds for Gotham’s infamous villain, yet it was later discovered that he wasn’t actually the Joker himself.

Joker: Folie à Deux is now out in cinemas.
