Joker 2 opens with a Looney Tunes-inspired animated sequence

As a music enthusiast who has been captivated by the enigmatic world of DC Comics since my childhood, I must admit that the upcoming “Joker: Folie à Deux” has me utterly intrigued! The fusion of animation, live-action, and musical sequences promises an extraordinary cinematic experience that few films have dared to attempt.

In the opening scene of Joker 2, also known as Joker: Folie à Deux, an animated sequence reminiscent of Looney Tunes is set to unfold, according to recent disclosures.

According to an extensive article about Todd Phillips, the director of the DC duology, it was revealed that the character Joker will appear in an animated film by Sylvain Chomet, who is also known for his critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated movie “The Triplets of Belleville” from 2003.

It’s only the intro that’s animated, but we’ve known for a while now that the film takes another stylistic turn: it’s got a lot of musical sequences.

Phillips elaborated on the concept, saying, “Our aim for this film is to give it an eccentric, unconventional vibe, as if a group of creative minds, rather than a traditional studio, were responsible for its creation.”

Although the movie bears a strong resemblance to musicals, director Phillips prefers not to label it as such, stating that “The majority of the music in the film is essentially dialogue. The character Arthur simply doesn’t have the words to express what he wants, so he sings instead.”

“I prefer not to give the impression that it’s similar to In the Heights, with a woman in a store starting to sing and everyone moving out onto the street for a dance-off involving the police. I adore In the Heights, but I want to clarify that this is not what we are aiming for.”

Joaquin Phoenix, who played Arthur Fleck, mentioned that it was significant for them to avoid singing the songs in a conventional way, as you might find in a typical musical. Instead, they aimed to steer clear of using vibrato and hitting precise notes.

Lady Gaga, portraying Harley Quinn, went on to clarify: “We pondered about what circumstances could lead two individuals to burst into a tune during a chat? How does the melody emerge if only the characters can perceive it? In our story, we’ll explore that mystery.”

As a gamer, I gotta say it: neither Arthur (as Joker) nor Lee (as Harley Quinn) aren’t seasoned vocalists. Their singing skills don’t exactly match those of the pros.

Apart from freely deviating from pitch while performing live songs in the movie, the actors were additionally urged to vary the pace and beat of their musical sequences. However, this freedom came with its challenges, as Phillips pointed out, making the editing stage a real “headache”.

The film “Folie à Deux” is set to hit theaters on October 4th. Meanwhile, you can own “Joker” today by purchasing it on Blu-ray or streaming it online.
