Joker 2 first reviews, Nightbitch and Minecraft trailers drop

As a cinephile with a penchant for biopics and a soft spot for ’90s nostalgia, I find myself both exhilarated and disheartened by this week’s cinematic news.

It’s been another busy week for movies as we leave summer behind and enter the festival season.

Based on previews for Amy Adams’ film “Nightbitch”, the “Minecraft” movie, and early reviews for “Joker: Folie à Deux” from Venice, there’s been quite a bit happening. It’s understandable if you’ve missed some of it.

If you’re planning a cinema outing this weekend, “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” is the highly-anticipated sequel to Tim Burton’s cherished original that you might want to consider. Other recent releases include “Alien: Romulus” and “Blink Twice”.

Should you choose to stay indoors, Netflix boasts an impressive selection as well. You’ll find top-tier recommendations across various genres, such as thrillers, comedies, horrors, actions, family films, and more in our curated lists of the best each category has to offer.

As you ponder your entertainment choice for the coming weekend, let me fill you in on the most significant film updates you may have overlooked this past week.

Similar to its forerunner, “Joker: Folie à Deux” could potentially be among the year’s most contentious films, based on early critical feedback.

The highly anticipated follow-up to the DC series made its global debut at the Venice International Film Festival, drawing mixed initial responses. Empire magazine referred to it as “grittier and more bizarre,” whereas the BBC stated it fell short, labeling it as a “disappointing movie.”

After the occurrences depicted in the movie “Joker“, Arthur Fleck (played by Joaquin Phoenix) ends up institutionalized at Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his actions. Battling with his two personas, Arthur encounters Lee Quinzel (portrayed by Lady Gaga) and discovers the music that had been hidden within him all along.

Amy Adams is back with Nightbitch, and this week we got to see the movie’s first trailer.

According to Rachel Yoder’s 2021 novel, the film portrays Adams in the character of a suburban mother experiencing an extraordinary change – she believes she is metamorphosing into a canine.

One character tells the mother in the trailer, “Motherhood transforms you. It taps into deep instincts within you.”

The film is crafted by Marielle Heller, both as writer and director, and features performances from Scoot McNairy, Mary Holland, Zoë Chao, Jessica Harper, Darius De La Cruiz, Archana Rajan, Ella Thomas, Stacey Swift, Adrienne Rose White, and Roslyn Gentle.

After making its grand entrance at the Telluride Film Festival, I’ve just discovered that Ralph Fiennes’ latest thriller, Conclave, has hit the ground running with an exceptionally high Rotten Tomatoes score of 100%.

The story unfolds within the walls of Vatican City where Cardinal Lawrence (Fiennes), a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, finds himself charged with selecting a new Pope following the sudden demise of his predecessor. As influential Church members gather within the ancient halls of the Vatican, a sinister plot begins to unravel, adding an intriguing twist to this tense drama.

Featuring the Harry Potter actor and Inside Man’s Stanley Tucci, this film has earned critical acclaim, as indicated by its stellar initial reviews that led to a flawless rating on the aggregator site for movie critics.

In the upcoming weeks, “Back to Black” is set to stream on Netflix within the United Kingdom. This announcement was made this week, following its digital premiere in May. On September 12, the movie will join Netflix’s library in both the UK and Ireland.

In the United States, the film “Back to Black” can be streamed on Peacock for all its subscribers. Additionally, you can choose to rent or purchase this movie from Amazon Prime Video, as well as other digital retail platforms.

Under the guidance of director Sam Taylor-Johnson, the contentious Amy Winehouse biography portrays Marisa Abela as the famed British artist-musician, who encounters and develops a romantic relationship with Blake Fielder-Civil.

In a groundbreaking move, actors Jason Momoa and Jack Black are featured in the debut film based on Minecraft, with the initial trailer unveiled this week.

Under the title “A Minecraft Film“, the sneak peek offers fans their initial look into the movie version of the popular game, showcasing beloved characters like Piglins.

The film traces the journey of characters Garrison (Momoa), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), Natalie (Emma Myers from Wednesday) and Dawn (Danielle Brooks from Peacemaker). They find themselves inexplicably transported through a strange portal into the Overworld, an odd, cubic realm that flourishes on creativity.

If you found yourself smitten with the character he played in the popular series “One Day” and “The White Lotus” Season 2, then here’s some delightful tidings! The talented Leo Woodall has secured his next starring part in a feature film.

Actor Woodall has agreed to team up with seasoned performer Dustin Hoffman in the upcoming crime thriller titled “Tuner“. This movie, helmed by director Daniel Roher, revolves around a piano tuner who discovers that his craft might have a darker application – solving safes for criminal activities.

Written by Oscar winner Roher with Robert Ramsey, production on Tuner will take place in Canada.

Riverdale’s Camila Mendes exits ’90s horror reboot

Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that there’s been some disappointing news this week. Actress Camila Mendes from Riverdale won’t be part of the remake of the ’90s horror classic I Know What You Did Last Summer.

Initially, the actor was slated as one of the main characters in the resurrected film series, but due to a clash in schedules, they were unable to continue with the role. It appears that Mendes’ involvement in the “Masters of the Universe” reboot, an ambitious production, may have been the cause for her departure from the project.

It’s still unknown who will be Mendes’ replacement.
