At the People Have the Power: A Tribute to Patti Smith event, Johnny Depp suddenly showed up – this unexpected visit came about two months following an incident where Patti Smith fell ill during a concert in Brazil.

On Wednesday evening, numerous renowned figures gathered at the iconic Carnegie Hall in New York City to pay tribute to the 78-year-old punk poet laureate and singer.

I was absolutely ecstatic as I found myself in the heart of an unforgettable evening. It was a dream come true, seeing Bruce Springsteen take the stage, followed by Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and none other than Michael Stipe from R.E.M. And that’s just naming a few! The energy was electrifying, and I couldn’t help but feel like one lucky fan in the midst of musical legends.

In a dynamic collaboration, The Boss teamed up with Flea for an energizing performance of Because the Night, a popular song by Smith and Springsteen from 1978.

As a lifestyle aficionado, let me share an electrifying experience I recently had: Karen O delivered a heart-pounding rendition of Smith’s iconic 1975 hit, Gloria. To make the evening even more unforgettable, Johnny Depp graced us with his presence for a surprise performance of Dancing Barefoot, collaborating beautifully with Alison Mosshart from The Kills. It was truly an exhilarating night filled with exceptional music and unexpected surprises!

Smith and Depp have shared a close bond for many years.

After her own sibling’s passing, they became very close, and the actress who played the Pirates of the Caribbean star served as inspiration for one of her songs titled “Nine” on her 2012 album Banga.

At that point, she shared with The Sun: “Approximately five years ago, I crossed paths with Johnny. His wife, Vanessa [Paradis], along with their daughter, attended my show in Los Angeles. We exchanged greetings backstage.

It turned out we had a great connection. After losing my sibling, I grieved deeply, but finding Johnny Depp seemed as if my late brother had sent him to me as a newfound brother.

During the playback of the album, Smith mentioned that he visited Depp while he was shooting The Rum Diary in Puerto Rico. It happened to be Depp’s birthday, and since Smith had no gift, he penned a song for him instead.

In addition to Smith, celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Michael Shannon, and Sean Penn participated by reciting a few of his poems.

The special evening reached its peak when everyone came together for a rendition of People Have the Power, with Smith joining most of the night’s artists on stage.

All proceeds from the star-studded event will help fund music education for underprivileged youth.

Following an incident in January when Patti fell on stage during a performance in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and needed to be taken away in a wheelchair, she finally spoke up about the event.

Instead of saying “The iconic singer played down the incident,” you could write “The famous singer minimized the event.” And instead of “She took to Instagram with a beaming snap,” you could say “She posted a bright photo on Instagram.” So, the sentence becomes: “The famous singer minimized the event by posting a bright photo on Instagram to assure fans she was ‘fine’, despite a second show at the venue being cancelled at the time.

Patti shared that following a migraine, she experienced a spell of dizziness and subsequently underwent an examination by a physician before resuming her performance in a wheelchair.

I wanted to assure you all that I’m doing well after a minor mishap. I temporarily stepped off the stage, regrouped, and reappeared 10 minutes later to chat with everyone, reassuring them of my health and serenading them with ‘Wing’ and ‘Because The Night’.

‘I was checked out by an excellent Doctor and was absolutely fine.

Despite global turmoil, this seemingly straightforward occurrence may not warrant such extensive focus. Rest assured, I’m doing well. Many thanks for your thoughtfulness and care. (sic)

In a more conversational tone: Given all the troubles happening around the world, it’s surprising that this simple event has attracted so much attention. But don’t worry, I’m just fine. Thanks a bunch for your concern!

However, even though Patti had given an assurance about her health, another performance was called off due to medical recommendations, allowing the singer of “Because the Night” to recover and return to ‘optimal health’.

I regretfully share the news, my fellow enthusiasts, that our scheduled performance at Teatro Cultura Artistica tonight has been unfortunately cancelled.

Presently, Patti is making a robust recovery, but our compassionate physicians advise that she requires just a bit longer to reach peak performance levels.

We are deeply grateful for your unending affection, encouragement, and comprehension, as well as the numerous messages and speedy-recovery wishes we’ve been receiving. Your kindness means everything to us.

During her performance, it was reported that Gloria took a fall approximately 30 minutes in, and she stayed down for quite a while before getting help.

The video shared on social media depicted Patti making her reappearance on stage in a wheelchair, where she expressed her apologies to the audience afterward.

She informed the crowd: “I’m truly sorry, but due to unexpected illness, my doctor has advised me that I won’t be able to complete our session right now. We’ll need to come up with an alternative plan. Please know that I deeply regret any inconvenience this may cause.

The audience responded in English: ‘Don’t be! We love you!’ 

In the heart of bustling Sao Paulo, I represent Cultura Artística Theater, where we recently hosted an artist who’s been battling intense migraines as of late. During her captivating performance here, she felt quite dizzy on stage.

The theater announced on Instagram that she is under the care of top-notch medical professionals, along with our team, they stated. Cultura Artística could not be reached for comment at this time.

Patti recently spent two days in Sao Paulo, showcasing the ‘Correspondences’ project alongside her Berlin collaborators, the Soundwalk Collective.

During the performance, she recited some of her writings alongside musicians.

According to Soundwalk Collective, Smith has been experiencing severe migraines over the last few days.

However, she expressed her desire to support us all, including you, by performing, as indicated in a statement they shared on their Instagram Stories, which was co-signed by Smith.
