Many were surprised to learn Johnny Depp will be playing Ebenezer Scrooge in a new film adaptation of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. As Depp looks for a major role to relaunch his career, we’re now getting a first look at his portrayal of the famously grumpy character in this latest version of the beloved story.
Recently released photos from the set of Ti West’s “Ebenezer: A Christmas Carol” – first published by The Daily Mail – reveal a transformed Johnny Depp fully dressed and made up as Scrooge. Andrea Riseborough is also pictured as the Ghost of Christmas Past. This marks the first look at one of two new film adaptations of A Christmas Carol currently in the works; the other version is being directed by Robert Eggers and stars Willem Defoe as Scrooge.
Details about the new movie are still limited, but the general story is fairly predictable. However, given that Ti West, the director of the ‘X’ horror films, is at the helm, it will likely be a unique take on the original Dickens story. The cast includes Tramell Tillman from ‘Severance’ and Ian McKellen, known for his role in ‘X-Men’. Paramount Pictures plans to release the film on November 13, 2026, barring any unforeseen issues. This will be Johnny Depp’s largest role since he began to return to acting in recent years.
