John Williams' 'Rey's Theme' goes to space

As a lifelong gamer and space enthusiast, I was absolutely blown away by Sarah Gillis’s performance of “Rey’s Theme” in space. Growing up, Star Wars was more than just a movie to me; it was an escape, a journey into a galaxy far, far away that sparked my imagination and fueled my dreams.

Until recently, a violin solo had never before been performed in space. Thanks to violinist and astronaut Sarah Gillis, it’s finally been done– and with Star Wars music, too.

Gillis played “Rey’s Theme” by John Williams together with other musicians from around the world, an accomplishment that may not be fully appreciated by those watching. Typically, violinists on Earth use gravity to help keep their bow in contact with the strings. However, there is no gravity in space!

It’s truly captivating to note that her performance harmonized with a symphony, created by artists hailing from various corners of the world. While circling the planet, this grand composition unfolded as musicians across the globe collaborated in unison.

On the Polaris Dawn mission’s Crew Dragon spacecraft, surrounded by her fellow astronauts as the only spectators, Gillis delivered the piece perfectly. The melodious “Rey’s Theme,” composed by Williams, made its first appearance in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, serving to introduce Daisy Ridley’s character, Rey.

The piece was chosen specifically for the event, as a collaboration between St Jude Children’s Research Hospital and El Sistema USA. It symbolizes hope and resilience, concepts that align perfectly with both organizations’ missions.

For the first time ever, an event like this has never been attempted, and it was perfectly suited to aid children all over the world. From its inception, Star Wars has primarily aimed at inspiring kids, sparking their creativity, resilience, and imagination. While Star Wars can be enjoyed by anyone, it was originally designed with children’s perspectives in mind. Kids are not only intelligent but also attuned to stories; they remember the emotions those stories evoked within them. Recall your cherished memories of watching Star Wars as a child? They were special because they resonated with you deeply.

Music, just like Star Wars, holds immense power to nurture and motivate the young minds of our globe. The performance selected by Gillis and her group is a perfect embodiment of this.
