John Wick’s Long-Gestating Caine Spinoff Finally Set to Start Filming

So, after the last movie, I was left wondering what would happen to Keanu Reeves’ John Wick. It seemed like his story might be over, but thankfully, the world isn’t quite done with the franchise! They’re officially starting work on a new spin-off film, which is great news for fans like me who want to see more of this universe.

According to reports, the new John Wick spin-off starring Donnie Yen as Caine is scheduled to begin filming in April. The project was officially announced last year at CinemaCon, but rumors about a Caine-focused movie have been circulating for some time. This will be the first John Wick spin-off feature film since Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, which came out in theaters last summer.

Donnie Yen Is Returning as Caine

Donnie Yen will return as Caine in this new series, and he’s also directing it. Rina Sawayama is also involved in the project. The script was written by Mattson Tomlin, who previously worked on The Batman Part II.

It’s currently unknown whether Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as John Wick, but he is producing the new spinoff. Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee from Thunder Road, along with Chad Stahelski (who directed the original John Wick films) and John Saunders, are also producers. Donnie Yen is serving as an executive producer.

After John Wick: Chapter 4 came out, it was pretty obvious fans really connected with Caine’s character. So, continuing his story felt like the most logical next step for the franchise. I’m really excited that Lionsgate is teaming up with Donnie Yen – he’s a fantastic filmmaker and I think he’s got the perfect vision to expand the John Wick universe in a way that feels true to his own unique style.

Caine Is a “Very Different Kind of Action Hero”

Yen was particularly interested in Caine’s complex character. He saw a hero who embodies love, duty, and selflessness, even within a harsh and unforgiving world, which makes him stand out from typical action heroes.

This movie is a chance to really innovate the action genre. I want to make the ultimate martial arts action film – something that fans of movies like John Wick will love, but with more emotional resonance and a fresh visual style. As the director and star, I’m eager to use everything I’ve learned over my career to create something both familiar and completely original.

I’m so excited about the upcoming movie focusing on Caine, and it’s amazing to see the John Wick universe expanding with these spin-offs! But did you know there was also a series called The Continental? It streamed on Peacock last year, and it was a real treat for fans. It took place way back in the 1970s, showing us the world of the Continental Hotel decades before the events we see in the John Wick movies.

Donnie Yen’s John Wick spinoff does not yet have an official release date.
