John Wick spin-off with returning characters gets exciting filming update

Production on the new John Wick spin-off starring Donnie Yen as Caine is starting soon, which is great news for fans of the action series.

Donnie Yen will return as the blind assassin he first played in the 2023 film John Wick: Chapter 4. He’s not only going to star in a new, currently unnamed movie, but he will also be directing it.

Although the spin-off was first announced in May 2024, development has been moving slowly until now. However, according to Deadline, production is finally set to start next month.

Mattson Tomlin is writing the script for the new movie, which takes place after the events of John Wick: Chapter 4. While the exact story is still under wraps, we do know that Caine is no longer bound by the High Table.

Since Rina Sawayama is returning as Shimazu Akira, it’s likely her character will be driven by revenge after Caine killed her father in John Wick: Chapter 4. The post-credits scene showed her confronting her enemy, hinting at this storyline.

Yen expressed his excitement about Rina joining the project, saying he’s thrilled to work with her again. He’s looking forward to building on the impressive performance she gave in John Wick: Chapter 4 and helping her character shine.

Producer and director Chad Stahelski, who has helmed all four of the main John Wick films, praised Rina Sawayama, calling her ‘a badass.’ He was particularly impressed with her performance in Chapter 4 and expressed excitement about future collaborations between her character and Caine.

This movie is the third separate story set in the John Wick universe. Other additions include The Continental: From the World of John Wick and Ballerina, which came out in 2023 and will be released in 2025, respectively. A prequel animated film and a new series called Under the High Table are also currently being developed.

Chad Stahelski is developing the fifth John Wick movie, even though it seemed like Keanu Reeves’ character died in the last film. Lionsgate Studios confirmed the project was moving forward in April 2025.

Lionsgate’s Adam Fogelson hinted at CinemaCon in April that Keanu Reeves, Chad Stahelski, Basil Iwanyk, and Erica Lee would only return for another installment if they had a truly exceptional and original story to tell with the characters and the world they’ve created.

The John Wick movies are available to buy or rent on Prime Video, plus DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD.
