John Wick director hopes Eva Longoria ‘made millions’ from timely $6M investment that rescued the first film
As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for spotting lucrative investments and a deep appreciation for Hollywood lore, I must say that Eva Longoria‘s story is nothing short of inspiring. Her investment in the now-legendary John Wick franchise has not only proven to be a shrewd move but also serves as a testament to the power of taking calculated risks.
Chad Stahelski, the director of John Wick, expresses optimism that Eva Longoria earned a substantial amount (millions) as an angel investor in the initial movie.
49-year-old Longoria revealed she poured $6 million into a 2014 film, and now receives periodic payments. She expressed her sole regret as not having invested in the whole franchise, which has raked in an impressive $1 billion so far.
56-year-old director, Stahelski, revealed on The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast that he discovered Eva Longoria, famous for Desperate Housewives, was the investor only after the completion and release of John Wick, starring Keanu Reeves.
He expressed his wish that the celebrity, who has recently disclosed earning ‘more than double’ her initial investment, successfully recovered all the money and even amassed a substantial fortune worth millions of dollars.
He explained the origins of the situation by saying, “A week before filming began, we encountered a funding issue known as gap financing. Unfortunately, one investor pulled out, leaving us with a shortfall of approximately $6 million. When our budget was $18 million, this is a significant blow.
As a lifestyle connoisseur, I must share a candid moment from one of my projects. Financial constraints were our reality, which unfortunately led to many team members parting ways. The situation was precarious, and we were on the brink of losing our locations. We were literally teetering on the edge, just 24 hours away from collapse.
In summary, Basil [Iwanyk, the movie’s producer], me, co-director Dave [Leitch], and Keanu Reeves all gave up their earnings, invested everything we had, yet it was not even close to being sufficient for the film production, as he further noted.
Later on, Basil arrived, telling us about a potential investor who could fill in the financial gap just two days before our project was scheduled to commence. Without hesitation, we jumped on board, unaware that this investor turned out to be none other than Eva Longoria!
Stahelski said he and Leitch took Eva to lunch at the Chateau Mamont and ‘just couldn’t thank her enough.’
Longoria and Stahelski have laughed about her good instincts over the years.
Longoria and Stahelski have reminisced and chuckled over her shrewd investment decision, with the director recalling how the actress admitted, “It was an investment, and I wasn’t fully aware of what was happening. I didn’t know what it was. But it seemed a bit strange and intriguing.
Keanu’s salary for the John Wick films was revealed earlier this year.
The first film earned him a base salary between $1 million and $2 million, the second between $2 million and $2.5 million, and the fourth installment earned the Canadian actor a whopping $15 million.
John Wick also kick-started Longoria’s interest in Hollywood investments.
Since then, Longoria launched her own production company, Hyphenate Media Group.
Longoria first admitted her investment in John Wick in an interview with Business Insider last month.
Originally, she admitted that she didn’t understand the workings of investments, yet surprisingly, a decade down the line, she continues to receive royalty checks from the movie.
Eva admitted her only mistake was not being involved with all the films.
Here’s what I find less informal and more straightforward: ‘What made me upset was feeling disconnected from the rest during that occasion. It was a single event. Taking that risk was part of it. However, my sole error lay in not being involved with all the movies.’
The actress confessed that she earned more than twice her initial investment in the film, implying she received over $12 million.
Under the guidance of director Stahelski and scriptwriter Derek Kolstad, this production initially featured Michael Nyqvist, Alfie Allen, Adrianne Palicki, Bridget Moynahan, Dean Winters, Ian McShane, John Leguizamo, and Willem Dafoe in key roles.
John Wick turned out to be a massive success at cinemas globally, earning approximately $86 million while only costing between $20 and $30 million to produce.
In this series, Reeves takes on the lead character John Wick, a former assassin who’s earned an unparalleled notoriety within the criminal world. Despite his attempts to stay out of harm’s way, he finds himself being dragged back into the brutal lifestyle unwillingly.
In the end, John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017) exceeded expectations at the box office, earning an impressive $171.5 million on a production budget of roughly $40 million.
For the production of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019), Stahelski once again took up his directorial role, with collaboration on the script coming from Kolstad, Shay Hatten, Chris Collins, and Marc Abrams.
In line with the preceding films, the third chapter outperformed its predecessors at the box office, raking in an impressive $327.3 million compared to a production budget of just $75 million.
In the newest installment of the series, Reeves joined once again with familiar faces like Ian McShane (Winston), Lance Reddick (Charon), and Laurence Fishburne (The Bowery King).
Ever since John Wick: Chapter 4 made its grand entrance in the U.S. on March 24th, I’ve been absolutely blown away! With staggering earnings of $440 million and a production budget of merely around $100 million, this film has proven to be an unparalleled success story!
