John Wick director has bad news for Keanu Reeves fans in upcoming spinoff

John Wick spoilers follow.

John Wick director Chad Stahelski has confirmed some bad news for Keanu Reeves fans.

After the demise of the title character, portrayed by Keanu Reeves, in “John Wick: Chapter 4”, he recently resurfaced in the spin-off film, “Ballerina”.

Earlier this week, the film titled “Ballerina” hit the screens, narrating the story of Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas), a Ruska Roma assassin, who is on a mission to avenge her father’s death. Despite Ana de Armas leading the movie, Keanu Reeves’ cameo has sparked curiosity about whether he might return to the character for future projects.

Sadly for John Wick enthusiasts, director Chad Stahelski has confirmed that the upcoming spin-off of the John Wick series, centered around the character of the blind assassin Caine played by Donnie Yen, will not involve the appearance of Keanu Reeves’ character.

As a devoted fan, I can share that when speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Stahelski revealed that the Donny Yen spin-off doesn’t feature the John Wick character. Instead, it showcases the extraordinary talents of Donny Yen himself, serving as a heartfelt tribute to the rich legacy of kung fu movies.

If “John Wick” (2014) was based on characters played by Charles Bronson and Lee Marvin, this movie revolves around Chow Yun-fat, John Woo, and Wong Kar-wai. I believe it’s more straightforward for the audience to understand because it falls within a subcategory of what we cherish.

In regards to Reeves’ role in the movie Ballerina, the director mentioned that the character of John Wick wasn’t initially part of the script.

Frankly, I had some reservations initially. However, recognizing the advantages and wishing to support director Len Wiseman, we decided to join forces. At that moment, our film John Wick 4 was making a big splash, so going back to the original budget of around $18 million for a new John Wick movie and trying to rebuild its success wasn’t feasible for him.

To ensure he continues playing the game, it’s crucial to provide him with a fair opportunity. The most straightforward method to convey this idea, particularly when considering the studio perspective, was to incorporate Wick into the story of Ballerina, within a unique timeframe.

Ballerina is out now in cinemas.
