John Stamos says he 'probably wouldn't be here' without his therapist helping him get sober

As a dedicated follower of John Stamos’ career and personal journey, I can’t help but be in awe of the transformative impact therapy has had on his life. His recent interview at the Unprisoned season two premiere in New York City was a testament to the power of seeking professional help when needed.

John Stamos credits his therapist with saving his life and career.

At a Beach Boys concert in New York City on July 16, the multi-talented performer who is both an actor and a singer, shared that he has been undergoing therapy. He brought his six-year-old son Billy on stage with him during the performance.

‘I probably wouldn’t be here [without him],’ he told Page Six.

For approximately two decades, Stamos, aged 60, has been visiting renowned psychiatrist Dr. Phil Stutz, well-known from the documentary “Stutz” featuring Jonah Hill, for his sessions.

The first time I visited Stutz, he told me, “If you weren’t so ignorant, you’d appreciate the goodness in your life more,” and I agreed with him.

The actor also persuaded his late Full House co-star Bob Saget to give therapy a try.

The first time we crossed paths, his quirks drove me up the wall. I told him, “If you want to be my friend, consider getting therapy.” Surprisingly, he took my advice and started going to Stutz for counseling.

Saget died in January 2022 from a head injury in Orlando, Florida.

Stamos shared that his therapist played a significant role in his recovery from alcohol addiction, following his 2015 DUI arrest.

About a month after his arrest, he checked himself into a treatment center, as mentioned in his memoir titled “If You Would Have Told Me.”

Stamos, 60, stars as Murphy, a new character in Unprisoned.

Kerry Washington plays the role of a relationship expert in this comedy. Her real-life father, Delroy Lindo, is released from prison and decides to live with Kerry and her adolescent son.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, the comedy has an impressive approval rating of 93% among critics, and an astonishing 94% approval rating from viewers.

The actor shared with Good Morning America that he drew on his own therapy sessions with the frank psychotherapist to bring authenticity to his acting performance.

‘I give free therapy to people,’ the former teen heartthrob joked.

“I find therapy intriguing,” Stamos shared. “It’s the driving force behind people’s actions and inactions.”

Unprisoned season two is streaming on Hulu.
