John Stamos reflects on life and death of longtime friend and colleague Bob Saget with Full House alum Dave Coulier: ‘We’re still processing the loss of him’
I can’t help but be deeply saddened by the untimely death of Bob Saget, a man whose life and career intersected with mine in ways that left indelible memories. Having grown up watching him on Full House, I was captivated by his ability to make me laugh and feel at home. His passing has left a huge void in our lives, as Coulier so eloquently put it.
During a recent episode of the “Full House Rewind” podcast, John Stamos and Dave Coulier paid tribute to their late friend and acting partner, Bob Saget.
During their conversation on the legendary sitcom, the pair shared many amusing stories and anecdotes about the comedian and actor. However, they didn’t avoid the sensitive topic of death, including the tragic passing of Bob Saget in January 2022.
Stamos expressed his raw feelings with clear emotion, saying, “We’re still grieving over his absence.” In response, Coulier, known for portraying Joey Gladstone during Full House’s eight-season tenure, commented, “His departure has left a significant emptiness in our lives. We dedicated the premiere episode of Full House Rewind to honor Bob.”
Stamos, age 60, shared that Saget, known for his role as Danny Tanner in Full House, underestimated or failed to grasp the extent of the love and respect he garnered from those close to him, such as friends, family, and admirers.
“For me, the most disappointing aspect is that he didn’t realize how cherished he was,” the actor who portrayed Jesse Katsopolis shared about his friend. “When he passed away, it was as if a massive wave of love hit us all. I’m not joking, I can’t recall any other person receiving such an outpouring of affection when they died, perhaps like Princess Diana.”
Stamos went on to say, “Unfortunately, that’s the downside. You see, he was overly critical of himself, as you’re aware.” He further explained, “We often labeled him an egomaniac, but in reality, he wasn’t one. Instead, he needed to boost his confidence because deep down, he didn’t feel good about himself.”
In simpler terms, the ex-actor from General Hospital once more emphasized how oblivious Saget was to the immense love the world held for him.
From my perspective as a lifestyle expert, I’ve come across individuals who underestimated their own brilliance and failed to recognize the love surrounding them. I’d encourage you to imagine this person continuing to shine and captivate audiences, just as they always did.
Later on, Stamos reminisced about a familiar quote from Saget: “Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed,” which Saget frequently shared during their friendship that began in the 1980s.
He shared with Coulier this important lesson from him: he had always spoken his feelings openly – “I love you,” “I care about you,” “I’m proud of you,” “You’re like a brother to me” – and reminded us that life is unpredictable, “Tomorrow isn’t guaranteed for any of us.”
In his memoir If You Would Have Told Me (published in 2023), Stamos recounted a lesson he received from Bob: The next day isn’t guaranteed. Embrace life fully, and express your affection to those dear to you.
In their recent podcast conversation, Stamos shared an anecdote from Saget’s memoir “Dirty Daddy: The Memoirs of a Dirty-Granted Father and Filthy Comedian,” first published in May 2014.
On the night that Saget passed away, wearing his audio tape felt soothing to me for some reason. I have listened to it every night since then as part of my bedtime routine.
After that, he started to recall a specific story from his memoir’s audiobook version that he believed he might have misunderstood.
One morning, as I opened my eyes and came to consciousness, a thought crossed my mind: “Could it be that in his book, he mentioned hitting his head and passing away?” I recalled wondering shortly after his demise. But then I dismissed the idea, thinking, “No, that wasn’t it.” So I revisited his texts and found him joking about falling and contacting TMZ to announce his supposed imminent death.
“Regarding his late friend and ex-coworker, who sadly passed away on January 9, 2022, at the age of 65, Stamos expressed, ‘He was just like that.'”
Around 4 p.m. ET on that tragic day, the cherished comedian and actor was discovered deceased in his Ritz-Carlton room in Williamsburg, Florida, located near Orange County.
I’d given everything I had during my stand-up performance in Ponte Vedra Beach the night before, and since then, I hadn’t left my room. It felt like all my energy had been drained from me, leaving me longing for the comfort of my bed.
As an obsessed fan, I can’t help but share some disturbing news I recently came across about my beloved comedian, Saget. A month after his tragic passing, an autopsy report was made public, revealing that he had sustained a severe blow to the back of his head, most likely from an unobserved fall. This trauma resulted in a subdural hematoma, which unfolded silently during his sleep. It’s a heart-wrenching reminder of how fragile life can be and how unexpectedly it can be taken away.
While driving with his five-year-old son Billy, Stamos received a call from his publicist Matt Polk, inquiring if he had any news about the Grammy-nominated comedian, as rumors spread on TMZ that several sources claimed he had passed away.
After receiving an odd direct message about his demise, Candace Cameron Bure from “Full House” contacted Stamos. It was then that they received confirmation of the sad news from Saget’s wife, Kelly Rizzo, during a phone conversation.
In his memoir If You Would Have Told Me (published in 2023), the two-time Emmy-nominated writer described the moment he transferred calls to Kelly: “When I hand over callers to Kelly, all I hear is a piercing scream. I crash land in the parking lot and my knees make contact with the asphalt with a painful thud. ‘Oh no!’ I exclaim.”
On January 9, 2022, which turned out to be his final Instagram post, the late Saget reflected on his show in Florida the previous night and expressed some thoughts about it.
As a seasoned comedian with years of experience under my belt, I can honestly say that last night’s shows at both Pontevedra Concert Hall in Jacksonville and Hard Rock Live in Orlando were truly exceptional. The audiences were not only receptive but also filled with positivity and appreciation. It’s always a delight to perform for such engaged and enthusiastic crowds.
I’m really feeling reinvigorated in my comedy career, reminiscent of the excitement and passion I had when I was just starting out at 26. It seems that I’m discovering a new voice within myself, and every moment of this creative journey is a gift. In two weeks, you can catch me performing live with my talented brother Mikey Young at pbimprov. And for those who can’t make it, be sure to check out BobSaget.com for my upcoming tour dates in 2022. I’m planning on bringing the laughs everywhere until I finally get that special filmed. And let me tell you, once I taste this addictive adrenaline rush again, I don’t think I’ll ever want to stop! Peace out, my friends.
Originating from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, yet with connections to Norfolk, Virginia, and Encino, California, Bob Saget bade farewell to his spouse, Kelly Rizzo, and his daughters Aubry (age 37), Lara (age 34), and Jennifer (age 31).
