John Simm’s “superior” British crime drama’s new season reveals story shake-up

The sixth season of John Simm’s popular ITV crime drama, Grace, begins airing very soon. Simm plays Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a Brighton-based investigator still grappling with the mystery of his wife’s disappearance as he solves new cases.

I’m really into the Grace show, and it’s based on these awesome detective novels by Peter James. He actually just released a new book in the series last year, which is pretty cool – shows he’s still at it!

All previous episodes of the series have adapted stories from P.D. James’ novels. However, the upcoming sixth season will feature an episode that isn’t based on, or taken from, one of her books.

So, I was reading an interview with the producer of Grace, Phil Hunter, and he mentioned they’re doing an episode that’s really focused on women’s safety. It’s going to be set on a university campus, and the writers and producers are taking the lead on crafting that particular story. Sounds like it’s going to be a pretty important one!

Hunter shared: “It’s a very sombre and important issue, and something that is sadly, very relevant.

What to Read Next

We collaborated with Caroline Carver on that storyline to ensure it felt natural and consistent with the overall tone and style of the show.

We needed to handle the depiction of violence against women with sensitivity, recognizing that the character’s actions, while horrific, were being presented from the killer’s perspective. The story involves a Sunday night event intended to entertain, and we wanted to ensure we addressed the serious subject matter with the appropriate level of respect, even when exploring the aggressor’s motivations.

Hunter emphasized the need to build the story in a way that empowered the victims and their loved ones, ensuring they had a voice and were active participants in how their stories were told.

The show was intentionally set at a university to give a platform for speaking out against the crimes depicted. As one creator explained, the university setting provides a group of people who actively challenge and condemn this type of behavior.

The producer explained that the storyline empowers the young women and students involved, giving them a real voice and making them key to solving the mystery and ultimately catching the killer.

It was crucial to handle this with a lot of care and consideration, and I believe we succeeded.

So, I heard from one of the people making ‘Hunters’ – Kieran Murray-Smith – that they’re really digging into storylines that aren’t straight out of Clive James’ books. They want to explore stuff beyond the direct adaptations, which is cool because it opens up a lot more possibilities for the show, you know?

Murray-Smith clarified that they haven’t surpassed the existing books in terms of content, but they’ve temporarily set some aside in case they decide to expand on them later.

We’ve recently started featuring stories developed by our producers, with support from author Peter James.

I regularly discuss things with Peter, and he always approves them. I connect with him at least every two weeks, and he’s been particularly supportive of our recent story ideas.

Everything you see that isn’t directly from one of Peter James’ books will be based on his original concepts or ideas. It will always retain the core elements of his work.

Since it first aired in 2021, the show Grace has become popular with audiences, receiving positive reviews on IMDB that describe it as polished and well-made.

I’m so excited for season six! It’s going to have four episodes, and it looks like David Tennant and Catherine Tate are both coming back, along with Richie Campbell, Zoë Tapper, Laura Elphinstone, Brad Morrison, and Juliette Motamed. Can’t wait to see what happens!

Season 6 of Grace starts on Sunday, March 29th at 9pm on ITV1. You can also watch all previous seasons (1-5) and the new episodes on ITVX.

The latest issue of Living Legends, a vibrant 100-page tribute to Harry Styles, is now available! You can find it at newsstands or purchase it online.
