John Rhys-Davies Teases Gimli’s Return in ‘The Hunt for Gollum’
In the upcoming “Lord of the Rings” film titled “The Hunt for Gollum,” Viggo Mortensen’s sword and possibly Orlando Bloom’s bow are already part of the production. John Rhys-Davies hinted that if he’s asked, Gimli will bring his axe to the set. The movie is currently scheduled for release in December 2027, but keep in mind that this date may shift since the film has previously experienced a delay. Aragorn (played by Mortensen) and Gandalf (portrayed by Ian McKellen) have already been confirmed for the cast, and fans are excitedly anticipating the potential return of other key members from the Fellowship.
At Fan Expo Philadelphia, moderated by Screen Rant’s Joe Deckelmeier, John Rhys-Davies expressed interest in reprising his role as Gimli for Andy Serkis’ upcoming project, “The Hunt for Gollum.” Unlike his character from “Lord of the Rings,” who is known for his witty remarks and teasing Legolas (played by Bloom), John Rhys-Davies chose to keep his response simple and direct. He simply stated that he would be happy to return as Gimli if given the opportunity.
“If I’m asked to serve, I will consider it and probably say yes.”
Beyond Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen, the full cast of “The Hunt for Gollum” hasn’t been officially announced yet. It’s also worth noting that director Andy Serkis will be reprising his iconic role as the troubled character, Gollum, in this film. Previously, actor John Rhys-Davies has been asked about possibly returning for “The Hunt for Gollum,” and last November, he seemed less optimistic about it due to the demanding prosthetics work and heavy costume associated with his character, Gimli, which might be too strenuous for him after so many years since the original trilogy ended. Rhys-Davies stated: “I have great respect for Andy Serkis, but the extensive makeup and Gimli’s bulky outfit may be too much for me 20 years later.
As a film enthusiast who holds Andy in high regard for their immense growth, if they were to extend an invitation, I’d be tempted – albeit hesitantly. Would I muster the courage to reapply makeup and relinquish my youthful visage once more? Perhaps, with the magic of CGI.
What Is ‘The Hunt for Gollum’ About?
Despite the apparent nature of the film’s title, “The Hunt for Gollum,” there remains a significant amount of enigma surrounding its details. While we know ‘what’ the hunt is for, the who, when, where, and especially why aspects of the storyline are yet to be revealed. Officially, the plot has not been disclosed yet, but the involvement of actors Sir Ian McKellen and Viggo Mortensen in the project sparked speculation about their mission to locate Gollum.
The movie titled “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum” is rumored to take place prior to “The Fellowship of the Ring”. In this film, Gandalf the Grey and Aragorn are said to be in pursuit of the enslaved keeper of the Ring of Power, Gollum. However, this hasn’t been definitively confirmed. If actors like John Rhys-Davies, Orlando Bloom, or others from “The Fellowship of the Ring” cast officially join the production, it would solidify the film as an unofficial prequel to “The Fellowship”.
Currently, McKellen, Mortensen, and Serkis are the only original stars who have confirmed their involvement in “The Hunt for Gollum”. The project is currently in its early stages, with no official filming date set at this time.
