As a huge fan of the Rambo movies, I’m really excited about the new one coming out! It’s a prequel, meaning it’s going to show us what John Rambo was like during the Vietnam War. The film, simply titled John Rambo, takes place years before the original First Blood – you know, the one where Stallone’s Rambo comes home and things immediately go wrong, sparking all that action and really highlighting the struggles veterans face. Interestingly, they’ve cast Noah Centineo as the younger Rambo this time, instead of Sylvester Stallone. It’ll be fascinating to see a different take on the character’s origins.
Production is underway on a new John Rambo prequel, currently filming in Bangkok, Thailand, according to Variety. The cast is led by Centineo, known for his roles in The Recruit, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, and Black Adam, and also features Yao (Sinners), Jason Tobin (Warrior), Jefferson White (Yellowstone), Quincy Isaiah (Winning Time), and Tayme Thapthimthong (The White Lotus). Jalmari Helander, director of Rare Exports and the action-packed Sisu, is at the helm.
Director Helander shared that he’s been a fan of Rambo movies since he was a child, and that influence will likely be visible in his work. He hinted that the upcoming prequel will be packed with action, similar to his film Sisu, but also emphasized that this Rambo story will be a more stripped-down, authentic, and gritty take on the character.
I first saw ‘First Blood’ when I was eleven, and it had a huge impact on me. The film wasn’t just entertainment; it inspired me to become a filmmaker and stayed with me throughout my childhood. Now, as we start making a movie about Rambo’s origins, we’re going back to the very beginning of his story. This film will be a gritty, realistic survival story about resilience, determination, and the loss of innocence. It’s a privilege to continue Rambo’s legacy with respect for the character and share the start of his journey with audiences.
Are Audiences Ready for ‘Rambo’ Without Stallone?

Netflix
Sylvester Stallone has played Rambo in every film, from the original First Blood in 1982 to Rambo: Last Blood in 2019. While the series is known for its intense action and a troubled hero, replacing Stallone is a big gamble. Some franchises, like James Bond and Jack Ryan, have successfully recast their leads, but it’s more difficult when one actor has been so closely linked to a character for over four decades. Stallone himself acknowledges the challenge, commenting that casting a new Rambo will be “quite a challenge.”

Centineo has shown he can handle action roles and even lead romantic comedies, like the ones that made him famous. However, taking over the role of Rambo, previously played by Stallone, is a challenge. Helander has impressed action movie fans, particularly with the Sisu films, which demonstrate his ability to create compelling characters with minimal dialogue. Rambo is a character best known for his quiet strength and explosive action, and the new prequel seems to be emphasizing that. While many details about John Rambo are still secret, more information will be released as filming begins.
