John Mulaney reportedly used humor, even jokes some might consider off-limits, to support his wife Olivia Munn while she bravely fought breast cancer for two years.
The 45-year-old, now in remission, shared with CBS Sunday Morning that they used to make inappropriate jokes about cancer to help ease tension and lighten the atmosphere, but those jokes would never be shared publicly.
It really helped me feel less scared. Whenever I was frightened, we’d talk through everything – my fears and his – and then he’d lighten the mood with a joke. It just made things feel much better in those moments. He’s amazing.
Between 2023 and 2024, Munn had five surgeries, including removal of lymph nodes, a double mastectomy, her ovaries, and part of her uterus.
The actress from Your Friends & Neighbors said she believes her husband is the best person in the world.
He was eager to attend all of my doctor’s appointments. He’s simply a very kind and enjoyable person to be around.
Munn remembered that the comedian, who was 43, used to write down thoughts about his cancer and hormone treatment in the small notebook he typically used for writing jokes.
‘He was there,’ the half-Vietnamese beauty said.
Being able to laugh through tough times, especially with someone funny, really makes things easier.
Munn was surprised to realize she hadn’t thought about getting married or having kids until she met Mulaney at Seth Meyers’ wedding in 2013.
‘I feel that this was always going to be my life,’ the Daily Show alum said of destiny.
Life is really about all the small, everyday moments. When you realize how fragile life is, you start to appreciate those little things the most – they truly are the best parts.
The couple, who have been married for nearly two years, are parents to three-year-old Malcolm Hiệp and 18-month-old Méi June, who was born through surrogacy.
To support John Mulaney’s continued recovery after his 2020 treatment for substance use, Munn reportedly conducts unannounced drug tests to help ensure he stays on track.
The comedian, originally from Chicago, was still married to Anna Marie Tendler when he met the actress from ‘Hit-Monkey’ at a church in Los Angeles in February 2021.
This happened around the time the 40-year-old artist entered a psychiatric hospital to get help with self-harm and depression – experiences she wrote about in her 2024 memoir, Men Have Called Her Crazy.
By May 2021, John Mulaney and his wife, Anna Marie Tendler, had separated, and he officially filed for divorce in July of that year. The divorce was finalized in January 2022, bringing their six-year marriage to an end.
Meanwhile, Munn previously romanced Tucker Roberts, Aaron Rodgers, Joel Kinnaman and Chris Pine.

The Emmy-winning comedian will be on tour with his Mister Whatever show for most of the year. He’s performing next this Tuesday at FirstOntario Concert Hall in Hamilton, Ontario.
