John Mulaney returns to late night with Netflix’s ‘Everybody’s Live.’ Here’s what we know
John Mulaney is coming back to late-night TV following the triumph of his unconventional, week-long special “Everybody’s in L.A.”, which premiered on Netflix last year.
Despite initially agreeing to just six episodes, it looks like the success of the show led both the streaming platform and John Mulaney to commit to a series with a more frequent schedule. The live show, titled “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney,” is set to premiere on Wednesday at 7 p.m. PT and run for 12 weeks without a break.
On a Monday update through social media, Mulaney unveiled that the initial episode will host Michael Keaton, renowned folk artist Joan Baez, comedian friend Fred Armisen, and financial columnist Jessica Roy from The Times as special guests. Hip-hop band Cypress Hill will serve as the musical entertainer for the show.
During an appearance on “CBS Sunday Morning,” Mulaney expressed that the live element of the show was what truly enthused him. He described it as an engaging and enjoyable test due to the risks involved.
He stated that there’s an exciting sensation knowing possibly many people are tuning in worldwide, without any delay, and one wrong move could significantly impact your professional path.

Television
John Mulaney’s recent venture on Netflix is a live late-night program that runs for six consecutive evenings, and it highlights unique aspects of Los Angeles, such as its residents, locations, and landmarks.
John Mulaney functions as a host, co-showrunner, and executive producer via his production company, Multiple Camera Productions, for this new show. Netflix playfully labels the program as “the inaugural celebrity chat-show.
In simpler terms, during an interview following the announcement of the release date at a Netflix event in January, Mulaney stated that the show would never be significant, never serve as a news source, and would always operate without caution. Furthermore, he mentioned that data provided by Netflix would consistently go unnoticed by them.
Originally known for his strong association with New York City, this comedian currently dwells in sunny Los Angeles. In a recent production titled “Everybody’s in L.A.”, he showcased his affection for the city by featuring local experts, discussing local concerns, and even taking live calls from Angelinos.
The ambiance of “Everybody’s in L.A.” was distinctly reminiscent of the ’70s, with the stage decor and Mulaney’s suits reflecting this era. Additionally, the show borrowed comedic elements from “Saturday Night Live,” where Mulaney had worked as a writer before gaining fame in stand-up comedy.
A quick preview for ‘Everybody’s Live’ features Mulaney standing by an old car parked outside a studio lot, with the door wide open, hinting that this new series will maintain the same unpredictable vibe as its predecessor.

According to Mulaney, Netflix has struck a deal that’s reminiscent of bargaining with the devil. He then reveals that “Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney” premieres on March 12, every Wednesday night, and it’s a talk show!
Next, the camera zooms in for a close-up as he removes his sunglasses (it’s completely dark outdoors). In another preview, we see the same wide shot where Mulaney requests the off-screen crew to signal when the shot is tight enough so he can begin speaking.
In addition to its visual aspects, various features from “Everybody’s in L.A.” will carry over to “Everybody’s Live.” This transfer encompasses Richard Kind, who plays a significant role alongside the main character, as well as the show’s automated presenter, Saymo.
At the January event, Mulaney mentioned that they’re having difficulties locating Saymo, so they continue to order Shastas and ginger ales, hoping he’ll eventually arrive. Regarding Richard, Mulaney shared an interesting story – they became acquainted through a situation reminiscent of the cartoon ‘Baby Reindeer’. Essentially, Richard would frequently appear where Mulaney worked, and ultimately, Mulaney chose to include him in his life.

The director anticipated that “Baby J,” the stand-up act of the comic, would elicit laughter. However, he’s finding it challenging to fully grasp just how deeply moving and therapeutic it turned out to be – an impact not only felt by Mulaney, but also himself.
In the upcoming series, a variety of celebrities, comedians, experts, and scholars will be showcased, much like “Everybody’s in L.A.” previously did. Notable comedian friends of Mulaney made appearances, such as Jon Stewart, Jerry Seinfeld, Nate Bargatze, and Sarah Silverman. These entertainers were joined by specialists like seismologist Lucy Jones, paleontologist Emily Lindsey, hypnotherapist Kerry Gaynor, and others on Mulaney’s guest sofas, leading to some intriguing combinations and spontaneous discussions. Mulaney hinted at more unusual duos appearing in the new program.
Under the continued partnership with Netflix, “Everybody’s Live” marks John Mulaney’s upcoming project. This new show will join his comedy specials, a 2019 variety special titled “John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch”, and various other productions already available on the streaming platform.
