John Mulaney claims he is a ‘significant financial contributor’ to Olivia Munn’s ‘large Vietnamese family’

John Mulaney shared that he provides financial support to his wife Olivia Munn’s family, who are based in Oklahoma.

Comedian Nick Kroll recently talked on the podcast ‘Working It Out with Mike Birbiglia’ about Olivia Munn’s large family, who are of Vietnamese descent.

As someone who really values family, I’m happy to support my niece, Olivia, and her large Vietnamese family in Oklahoma City. I contribute financially to help them out whenever I can – family means everything to me, and I’m glad to be in a position to help.

The actor explained that before age 39, he hadn’t financially supported anyone from Vietnam. Now, he regularly supports ten Vietnamese individuals.

Mulaney and Munn tied the knot in July 2024 after welcoming son Malcom, four, in 2021.

They later had daughter Méi, who was born via surrogate in September 2024.

John Mulaney shared that he enjoys supporting his wife’s family, who came to the US as refugees from Vietnam. He also mentioned that his own parents are financially stable and don’t need his help.

He explained that when someone’s parents are already successful, there’s not much you can do for them. He finds real pleasure in helping Olivia’s family and doing enjoyable things with them.

You know, I often think about trust in relationships, and it’s something I explore a lot with my clients. It really hit me the other day – do we ever subconsciously wonder what the other person is getting out of being with us? Like, when things are going well, are they secretly thinking about what they might gain financially, or in some other material way? It’s a slightly cynical thought, but it made me wonder if that quiet calculation sometimes underlies even the best connections.

The former Saturday Night Live cast member joked that it’s not surprising someone would say something like that, comparing the idea of thoughts being ‘in the back of the mind’ to simply being expressed out loud – ‘what they’re actually saying.’

He remarked how nice it was to be around people who did talk about money, especially since he grew up in a family where money was never discussed.

Olivia Munn shared on Seth Meyers’ show that her mother didn’t meet her husband until after they had their first child.

The stars began dating in 2021, just months before their son was born one day before Thanksgiving.

Mulaney first met Olivia’s mother, Dung Kim Schmid, when she came to see the new baby and for the holidays.

Schmid and Mulaney have since developed a close bond.

In an interview on Today With Jenna & Friends last year, Munn shared that her husband and mother are very close friends, calling them ‘besties’.

She mentioned John keeps a handwritten list of Korean dramas and movies they want to watch together, and he marks them off as they finish them. They both really enjoy this.

Before having their daughter, Munn shared with Vogue magazine that she had previously frozen her eggs, hoping to have more children with Mulaney.

Okay, so I was totally devastated to hear about her breast cancer, but honestly, even through all that, she’s inspiring. And she just shared the most personal thing – she and her husband decided to do fertility treatments before starting chemo and radiation. It makes so much sense, you know? Those treatments can mess with your ability to have kids, and they were being proactive about it. It just shows how much they want a family, and I’m seriously rooting for them!

She explained that after receiving her diagnosis, they decided to try one more cycle of egg retrieval, hoping for a positive outcome. She shared that she underwent the procedure three times – at ages 33, 39, and 42.

John and I have been discussing having more children, and while we’re not finished growing our family, we were unsure about my treatment options – whether I’d need chemotherapy or radiation.
