The discussion around J.K. Rowling’s views on gender issues is still happening, and John Lithgow has now voiced his disappointment with her statements. This comes after he initially minimized the controversy when he joined the cast of the new HBO Harry Potter series.
John Lithgow recently told The Independent he was surprised by J.K. Rowling’s reaction to criticism regarding her opinions on gender.
“I’m surprised by it too, and disappointed,” Lithgow said.
This comment shows a clear shift in how the experienced actor is speaking, especially as he prepares to play Albus Dumbledore in the upcoming film.
Lithgow Previously Dismissed the Controversy
That shift is what makes the situation particularly interesting.
I remember when Hugh Grant signed on, there was already a lot of discussion about J.K. Rowling’s opinions, but honestly, it didn’t seem to sway his decision at all. It just wasn’t something he focused on when he took the part, as far as I could tell.

John Lithgow reportedly dismissed the question when asked if it bothered him, according to a recent interview with The Times of London.
“Oh, heavens no,” he said when asked if he reconsidered joining the project.
He also wondered why Rowling’s personal opinions were being discussed, simply asking, “Why does this even matter?”
Honestly, it’s frustrating to see him suddenly worried about this issue now that the Hollywood press is all over it. He completely brushed it aside when he was actually making the deal, and now he’s acting like it’s a big concern. It feels really convenient, you know?
“Urged to Walk Away”—But Stayed Anyway
Lithgow still insists he was always committed to the project, even though he admits it came with a lot of pressure.
“I was urged to walk away,” he said. “And I was not about to do that.”
Look, the actor explained it to me like this: it wasn’t about avoiding the drama, it was simply about focusing on his work. He made it clear that his career goals were the driving force behind his choice, and everything else was just background noise. It felt like a pretty straightforward, professional take on a messy situation.

Lithgow explained that the justifications for taking action were far more compelling than the reasons to object to Rowling’s statements and actions.
At the same time, he made clear that he does not fully agree with Rowling’s stance.
“I do disagree with much of it,” he said. “She has doubled down on it at her own cost.”
A Shift in Tone—or a Response to Pressure?
Overall, what Lithgow said suggests he’s experienced a common situation in Hollywood.
He’s still dedicated to the project and plans to see it through, but he’s become much more critical of Rowling than he used to be, moving beyond simply ignoring the controversy.
That raises the obvious question: what changed?

The debate hasn’t really changed. J.K. Rowling’s opinions – and the responses to them – have been well-known for a long time. John Lithgow was fully aware of the situation when he agreed to participate.
Now that he’s officially part of a major upcoming project, he’s surprisingly voicing dissatisfaction with the original author whose work is being revived.
It’s up to viewers to decide if this represents a real shift in thinking or just the result of working under pressure in Hollywood.
The Bigger Picture for the HBO Harry Potter Series
Jeff Lithgow’s statements come as HBO presses ahead with its debated revival of the Harry Potter series, a project that has already faced significant public and political discussion.
Because Rowling created the series, she continues to be heavily involved, keeping discussions about it alive and ongoing.

If Lithgow’s changing position is a sign of things to come, it seems even people working on the project might keep getting drawn into the ongoing discussion, even if they didn’t originally want to participate.
