On Saturday, speaking directly to PEOPLE, I found myself reminiscing about a life-changing moment – the day I discovered that a six-year-old was battling Type 1 diabetes, a revelation that left an indelible mark on my heart as their biggest fan.
It turned out that Miles’ illness during summer camp necessitated a seemingly straightforward visit to the emergency room, as believed by the couple.
The singer clarified that he had been at the emergency room due to the issue, and they tested his blood sugar levels. The assumption was that this could have been a response to the infection, or perhaps he might be suffering from diabetes.
He continued: ‘They did some more tests and decided it was the latter; that he was type 1 diabetic. Chrissy was upset a little bit when she first heard. She’s been so good at learning what she needs to do.’
And Legend assured the outlet that he was ‘very optimistic’ and ‘practical’ about the situation.

He mentioned: ‘Miles is at an early stage of his diagnosis, and during this phase, his insulin still performs some crucial functions. However, as the condition advances, it will reach a point where we’ll need to closely monitor everything, including carb intake, administer insulin in advance, and be more vigilant.’
As per the Mayo Clinic, type 1 diabetes is a health issue characterized by the pancreas producing minimal or no insulin at all.
‘Insulin is a hormone the body uses to allow sugar (glucose) to enter cells to produce energy.’
The clinic notes that this particular illness may stem from genetic factors and specific viruses. It’s often noticed during teenage years, but it can also be identified in adults.
Individuals with Type 1 diabetes need to control their blood sugar levels through insulin injections and careful dieting, as there is currently no known cure for this condition.
