John Hannah has finally spoken about potentially returning to The Mummy series for the upcoming film starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Reports surfaced late last year that Fraser and Weisz would reprise their roles as Rick O’Connell and Evelyn Carnahan from the original 1999 movie.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the next movie in the series will probably skip over the events of The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. That film featured Maria Bello as Evelyn, taking over the role previously played by Rachel Weisz.
So, I just heard that Universal’s tapped Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett to direct the new movie, and David Coggeshall is writing the script. Pretty cool combo, I think!

When the movie was first announced, Hannah’s involvement wasn’t mentioned, leaving fans wondering if the actor who played Jonathan, Evelyn’s brother, would return to provide some humor like he did in the original.
In an interview with Radio Times, Hannah admitted he hadn’t received any official word about a new film. However, he’d seen the same rumors as everyone else and expressed his enthusiasm about potentially reuniting with the cast, saying it ‘would be fun’.

Hannah admitted he didn’t know how the show’s creators planned to reunite the original cast, and added that figuring it out wasn’t his job. He said they’d need to rely on the writers for that.
There was a positive update, though: the actor mentioned he’d talked with Brendan Fraser about the reboot, and Fraser expressed interest in reuniting the original cast.
Yes, getting Brendan and Rachel Weisz back together was definitely something everyone wanted, and Rachel was happy to make it happen.

Honestly, she really earned the right to do her own thing. She’d built an amazing career for herself – becoming a successful producer and actress, even getting an Oscar nomination! It’s awesome to see someone achieve so much and then be able to call the shots.
Hannah initially questioned accepting the role of Jonathan in The Mummy. She admitted that her first thought was, ‘I’m a serious actor – why would I do something so silly?’
He added that those movies are enjoyable for families, and he’d be happy to participate in future installments if asked. He was straightforward about not wanting to pretend to know more than he does, admitting he’s just as in the dark as everyone else based on what he’s seen.
