John Boyega, who played Finn in the recent Star Wars films, has said he’d only consider returning to the franchise under certain conditions. He’s previously discussed facing racism from some fans and his dissatisfaction with how his character was developed in The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker.
Daisy Ridley is coming back for a new Star Wars film set 15 years after The Rise of Skywalker, and fans have been wondering if John Boyega might return as Finn. Recently, the cancellation of a planned movie called Hunt for Ben Solo has sparked campaigns to bring that project back, leading to even more discussion about what might happen with characters from the most recent Star Wars trilogy.
John Boyega recently shared at Liverpool Comic Con (as reported by Collider) that he’d consider returning to the Star Wars universe, but only if certain things happened. He specifically wants it to be a movie, believing the close friendship between his character, Finn, and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) deserves a cinematic portrayal. He also insists that Poe and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo) be included, and most importantly, that the script be excellent. You can find Boyega’s full statement below.
Me and Oscar are very stubborn, and we believe the bromance should only be on the big screen.
We definitely need a film, and a fantastic script is essential. I talked to Joonas earlier and asked him to be part of the story with Poe and Finn. If we can get that team together, the possibilities are endless.
John Boyega says he has no information about the upcoming Star Wars movie focusing on Rey and a new Jedi Order. However, jokingly referring to himself as the “Tom Holland of Star Wars,” he suggests he’ll be the first to accidentally leak details if he finds out anything, referencing Holland’s reputation for prematurely revealing Marvel spoilers.
Trust me, I’m like the Tom Holland of Star Wars. Once I know something I’ll let you know.
John Boyega and Oscar Isaac have both expressed disappointment with how their characters, Finn and Poe, were portrayed together. Boyega thinks a new story focusing on their relationship could address those issues, but he specifically wants it to be a film, not a Disney+ series. Because Lucasfilm is now focusing more on making movies, this possibility seems more likely than it did previously.
We don’t know yet when Chewbacca will be back in a live-action Star Wars film, but John Boyega hopes to see Finn and Poe team up with the Wookiee again. Chewbacca shares several memorable moments with Finn and Poe throughout the sequel trilogy, and a future movie could continue those strong friendships.
It’s possible Finn is secretly involved in the upcoming “New Jedi Order” movie, but the film’s script has been rewritten several times, so he could genuinely not know anything about it yet. Considering his strong bond with Rey and his confirmed Force abilities in The Rise of Skywalker, a return for Finn in “New Jedi Order” makes sense.
Shawn Levy’s Starfighter, which takes place after The Rise of Skywalker, could potentially feature a return appearance by Finn. While the show is designed to be mostly self-contained, it’s still part of the official Star Wars story. The main actors have already been revealed, so any role for Finn would probably be a brief cameo or a smaller part.
Although Finn hasn’t been back in a live-action Star Wars film or show since The Rise of Skywalker came out in 2019, the character has continued to appear in other Star Wars stories. Omar Benson Miller provided the voice for Finn in The LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special and LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation. He’s also a central character in the novel The Last Order by Kwame Mbalia, which was released on October 21, 2025.
